  • How good was the early 2000s lightweight division

Thought about this division in the early 2000s, say 00-05, in another thread on NSb, and it got me thinking about how good or bad historically was this era, and how it compares to other eras...

    We had

    Floyd
    Casamoyer
    Corrales
    Castillo
    Frietas
    Spadafora
    Lazcano
    Johnston
    And a few others

And nearly everyone but Johnston was prime...

I think it was a really good division historically and would be top 5

A lot of talent and potential hof members

    What do u guys think

Johnston was one of my favorites. Alot of fighters would not fight him.

Come on guys,, was this a great period for lightweights,, i think it is,, comparable to the late 80s with chavez and pernell, camacho,, or some of the old school eras like benny leonards, or the 30s-40s with ross, armstrong, etc

I think Mosley would have struggled in this LW era and wouldn't be as overrated as he is today as a LW.

A definite good era for 130-135.

Mayweather-Johnston is a fight that should have happened. I have no idea why Mayweather didn't take that fight.

I think Mosley could have handled himself well against some of those guys.

Wouldn't you say he's top 10 at LW, though lower top ten?

Honestly I don't think Mosley struggles against any of those guys outside of Mayweather. He was damn good in those days and even when he moved up he was the first one to clearly beat a prime Oscar de la Hoya in my opinion.

Yeah, i would have loved to seen mosely in this era,,, I think he could beat alot if not most of the guys except for floyd

I never understood why floyd didnt try and fight spadafora, and johnston in 03 after his castillo fights.. Those would have been much bigger fights than n'dou and sosa...

If memory serves me correctly i think HBO was building towards a sapda-floyd fight as both were undefeated, both had been showcased on HBO and both had lengthy title reigns, but then Spada choked vs dorin and got a draw and then legal issues pretty much killed the fight from happening....

Casamoyer, freitas, castillo, corrales gave us great great fights,, a very underrated fab 4 type, that did not get the recognition that it deserved

He struggled with Phillip Holiday (The only decent fighter he fought at Lightweight) so I think there's a good chance he'd struggle with Johnston and Casamayor and possibly some of the others.
