  • williams vs alvarez outcome

i am curious to know what you guys think. i realize after martinez and the gift he got against lara that williams was declining but it would have been an excellent text. how do you guys think the fight would play out? would alvarez percise power have been too much?

id like your opinions. it breaks my heart to know williams cant continue to live a full life as a fighter doing what he loves. fighters you love or hate, you hate to see when they are on the downturn let alone paralized or brain damaged. i cant stand calzhage but if this happened to him, happened to his family, i would be heartbroken.

williams gave so much for my entertainment.

At the time the fight was in the making, I gave Alvarez the edge. I think Williams was slipping as a fighter and his style would benefit Alvarez. I think Alvarez sharp counter punches would have led him to a a clear decision or late stoppage.

And yes, I agree. It's a very sad situation and I admire the way Williams has handled it.

Williams would have really made canelo work,, but i think canelo would eventually catch williams and beat him either by stoppage or decision

Maybe its my bad memory but i dont remember Williams being on the downslide when he was gonna fight ginger....He was one of the most avoided fighters. Something about no gain all risk that promoters used to say when talk of him and MAyweather or Williams and Mosely ect came up. In fact that was a hell of a climb ginger was gonna take in Williams. Williams would of surely pushed Canelo to stay busier. I dont think this fight would of showcased Canelo in a exiting 12 rounder, Williams had the workrate and reach to outbox Canelo. Also Canelos slow stalking footwork and ability to cut off the ring was .....very slow. Canelo did have a powerr advantage with strong accurate combinations which could negate all of Williams work at any time if landed. Canelo is clearly improving every fight now. This is a toss up for me.

Well, he was brutally knocked out cold by Sergio Martinez. Following that, he looked terrible against Lara and took a lot of punishment in a fight he clearly lost. That's a lot different from where he was prior to his first fight with Sergio Martinez. I don't think Williams ever looked the same after his first fight with Martinez.

I felt Alvarez punched with too much authority for Williams to get by with his aggressive style and lack of defense. Even at his best he would have had major problems with Canelo.

The thing with williams is that he was very easy to hit, yet didnt have alot of power because he threw more arm punches in volume, then he did setting up shots and sitting down on them,, Guys like that need a huge chin, like a kassim ouma, or they need huge power like gatti or corrales or lyles, or they will get unraveled by guys like serg, lara, etc..

Williams had a decent chin, but not a granite one he would need with his lack of punching power,,,
Williams could outwork anyone, especially at welter, but at 154 or higher, his lack of power, lack of defense, etc really exposed him,,, Im glad he never fought pavlik, because a guy like pavlik would have dropped bombs on williams...

It would have been a good fight but I agree that Williams was on the slide at that time.

Another good matchup that almost happened for Canelo was James Kirkland.
