  • Who should rank higher p4p?

Who would you rank higher p4p, Gene Tunney or Barney Ross? The IBRO ranks Tunney 20th with Ross "just missing the cut". With all due respect to the esteemed members of that organization, I'm not sure I agree. Like Tunney, Ross fought most of the best at and around his weight. Unlike Tunney he never drew the color line. What is your perspective on why one should be rated higher than the other?

I would say Barney Ross would most likely rank higher for me. Even though Tunney was a pioneer for heavyweight boxing with his style, and beat Dempsey twice, I think Barney Ross had wins that were equal, better than or comparable to those wins, such as his victories over McLarnin and Canzoneri.

Smart boxer, as was Tunney - I think he also showed a tremendous amount of heart vs a true great in Henry Armstrong.

Overall, I would have Ross slightly higher than Tunney.

Then again, Tunney is one of the best LHWs of all times in my opinion, probably top 3 and definitely top 5.

    Damn, it's a tough one.

Tough indeed. I happen to think Tunney is about as bad ass as they come...A real technician who put his craft on the front line and could fight with the best of em....But Ross was fantastic as well!

But yes, very tough to decide, prefer Tunney, but only because Ross was a light puncher.. Skillswise, it's a dead heat and both have excellent resumes.
No I was referring to Barney Ross's fight against Armstrong.

Resume wise I give the nod to Ross... I think he gets overrated a lot but his resume is better than Tunney.

H2h I think Tunney beats him on points and skill wise is slightly better..

Very close caliber of fighters and on an atg list I would probably have them very close to each other

Indeed, I missed that.. Ross was incredibly tough, and it's only the sd loss to Hank, that imo, puts him just a hairs breath behind Tunney in the all time stakes.. Armstrong was the man, as was Dempsey when he first fought Tunney..

              Great question. Both great fighters.

Not even sure who I'd rank higher. Probably Tunney.
