I think what happens is they make millions over a few years and as a result they get credit based on that income making it seem like a lifestyle that is not sustainable is
Like Holyfield's house, he buys a 109 room mansion in 1997, he got credit for it based on huge past earnings, but doesn't he have to realize, im not making money much longer and i cant sustain this

thats what i see the issue as, unsustainable lifestyles based on thinking that income level will always be there
Plus the fact that Holyfield had so many kids with different mothers, which meant child support payments and owing money to contractors for his house.

Banks hold money, but they don't manage it. You need an honest and competent administration team, and of course they would have to be paid too. Unlike the NFL, there is no root organization to be held accountable. We're talking about a worldwide sport.

I love the idea of a pension for fighters, but I just don't think it is feasible unless boxing changes dramatically.

Good point scott it would take the sanctioning bodies to unite and put a percentage into pension funds. Its kinda of interesting that Nba players end up broke as well despite having a sound pension fund

Tyson was also broke and needed money, but im glad he just stopped, SRR is like Roberto Duran, who keep fighting in his 40s and suffered many more losses.
I do not think that the losses at the end of robinson and duran's career diminish there legacy what so ever. Duran even won a minor world title in his late forties at 168 and Ray was fighting world rated fighters in the twilight of his career and not holding his own.

That being because the issue goes much deeper than basic fiscial responsability and planning. And Basketball players make a lot of money! As you alluded to in a prior post there are lifestyle issues: big houses that are essentially non producing assets...Cars that lose half their value when driven 15 feet off the lot, etc.

I quick looked at Sugars "picking up the pennies" run from 1960-65, he was not in his prime but did have a few fights that his opponents would swear he was!!!!

              bouts-56
              won--38
              lost--13
              draw-4...(all on the road)
              nc----1

of these bouts 4 were World Titles. None of the looses were tko or KO because no one ever stopped Robinson in the amatuers or pros!

Someday I'll write a few lines addressing why some of the great fighters don't walk away when people think they should. Its very difficult for anyone who hasn't dedicated their lives to an ambition that included danger could understand and thats why its close to impossible to clearify.
Money is actually superfical, it has little meaning when compared to the actual competition. Again difficult to relay!

              Some of the contests included losses to;
              Stan Harrington (2) 0-2
              Joey Archer
              Denny Moyer (2) 1-1
              Gene Fulmer (2) 0-1 + D
              Paul Pender (2) 1-1

theres 9 bouts with top tier men from the 60s that would be relevant in any era! Again this is Robinson on the road competing against the title contenders and a few home town fighters where a promoter put up enough money for Ray to show, so he did!!! Ray.

Roy Jones doesn't do it for the money. Where are his friends to talk him into retiring?

Who told you that? Roy definitely needs the money.

And Roy Jones is following Robinson's path if he continues to keep fighting.
