This thread really makes me want to read the book "War, baby". It's about the fight, I purchased it recently and is starting to collect dust.

I still think that McClellan was the better fighter and that we can't fully base everything on their fight because there were some extrodinairy circumstances at play.

But having said that I think Benn would always give him some trouble if Gerald didn't finish him early. It's true that his defense was lacking and Benn was able to find the target too much with his power punches. It's a stylistic thing, but I'd pick McClellan in a hypothetical rematch where both men are healthy.

But that sounds cruel to be honest.
I have no experience in that type of thing, but I'm pretty sure the punch kills the animal instantly. Rabbits are very fragile.

As far as the brain injury, some believe it was Benn's rabbit punching allowed by the referee. Others say it was something else. As with all brain injuries in boxing, it's impossible to know what specific blow caused it.

Those infamous rabbit blows after the bell as well as the flying hook that caused the headbutt came well after round 6. McClellan was already blinking erratically well before that. I think the brain bleed started at some point between rounds 2 and 5.

geralds sister (a nurse) has said he had big, weird lumps on his head after the first jackson fight. she begged him to get checked out but he refused, she also says he wasnt the same after that fight, that there was something off about him. she said she believes king worked so feverishly to remove steward from geralds corner and replace him with his own right hand man so that the injuries sustained by gerald wouldnt be noticed and he would keep making don that money.

its impossible to know when the damage was done and or aggravated to a life threatening point. either way everything that happened that night in terms of gerald taking damage to the head surely had a negative effect. even if the damage was already done it still made it worse.

I don't think it was the Jackson fight. Benn's dirty tactics obviously played a large role. Dehydration and head trauma during training without proper recovery may have also been factors of varying degrees.

Better to kill one quickly then let if suffer.

Jackson, in my opinion, is the hardest puncher P4P in the history of the sport so it wouldn't surprise me if any damage came from their initial meeting.

im no doctor,, but i think jackson was the start of the troubles, and benn was the straw that broke the camel's back

alot of people around G-man, said he was never the same mentally after the jackson fight

And with jackson being a probably the hardest hitter of his era,, i think there is validity to that

Barring the first knockdown. Dark destroyer takes his soul inside 6.

Gman clearly had some brain issues going into the fight. A healthy prime Gman beats a healthy prime Benn IMO and I really rate Benn. I just feel a prime Gman with a straight ref and not one protecting Benn gets him out early. If you look at the fight the ref was clearly protecting Benn and gave him a long count. I feel there is a strong case for Gman winning in round 1 and there was something wrong with him so what would have happened if he was in his prime?
IMO both fighters were never the same after that fight. Benn's speach became more slured and the trauma of that fight left it's mark.
