The referee was French. Yes there is never bad refereeing performances in America or the like. Russell Mora's performance in Mares-Agbeko I was the height of referring competence.

Benn-McClellan was the first fight I saw live on television.

I highly doubt he was brought in for corruption.

The guy couldn't even speak english other than the commands.

        Horribly inconsistent and unprofessional.
He was a French referee, no doubt appointed by the WBC.

There are many fights where a loss is blamed on the ref; but who would deny Mayweather's win over Hatton, or Buster Douglas over Tyson, or Tunney over Dempsey 2?

Despite McClellan's dominance in round 1 and his terrible injuries, Benn definitely deserved that victory.

But was he brought in for being the most competent?

Refs in the US for sure have their issues from time to time as well. But for the big fights they try to assign only the best guys.

He was brought in most likely by the WBC.

You're implying that "English refs" are bad based off this French ref.

I doubt the BBBoC had anything to do with assigning the ref, but let's say they did, why would they bring in a ref who doesn't speak English to do their corruption?

It was likely a Ref brought in as a standard procedure and he had a bad night.

I think it's a little silly to base all "English Ref's" off of this performance. Especially considering he's not English.

He reffed a fight in England, as I already clarified. That's the pertinent point not his nationality.

And I'm not basing it just on that one performance. It's the inconsistencies across the board (some fights are allowed to go on past when they should, while others are stopped before their rightful time) that irk me.

My observation is that in the UK fights tend to get stopped quicker than usual. Of course my opinion is based on a relatively small sampling.

Yes, stoppages tend to be a little earlier over here. We have had some very high profile brain injuries in fights:

Obviously Gerald McClellan; but Michael Watson, Spencer Oliver and Paul Ingle too. All world class British Stars.........

mcclellan in shape and with a corner destroys benn imo. i think their fight is a case of one man being overconfident, not training properly and underachieving on the night while the lesser fighter rose to the occasion and boxed out of his skin. managing to beat a fighter he had no business even being competitive with let alone defeating. like a lewis-rahman I situation on a smaller scale.

Desperately disrespectful to Nigel Benn. His record and reigns at middleweight and super middleweight speak for themselves. Only ever beaten by world class boxers, non of which completely outclassed him.
