  • What's The History Section's Thoughts On Deontay Wilder?

I know this isn't a history question but I wanted to get the thoughts of knowledgable people I respect rather than deal with the bull**** of NSB

He does seem to have that lanky build that generates tons of power a la Tommy Hearns. His hand speed seems unusually fast for a really big Heavy. His footwork doesn't look mechanical like all big Heavies do. The quick fights and lack of rounds is troublesome. They really need to put him in with a tough survivor who'll make him work.

I've only seen the fight one time but I believe he hurt Liakhovich initially with a left hook.

Looks decent but I still have huge question marks over him.

Anyone who fights at the level he does has question marks.

He's done what he's supposed to so far.

If I was his trainer I would focus on teaching him to box. Make him spar with boxers like Kevin Johnson 12 rounds a day while focusing on the jab and defence. Guys like Wilder make it to the top with out learning the basics. And then when they lose, they try to go back and learn what they missed. Often that is too late. To me, lacking this important part of development is far worse than his being moved slow against limited opposition. Moving a fighter slow is alright with me as long as he keeps stepping up his opposition gradually without any gigantic jumps in competition. I was talking with a friend about this and he compared Wilder to Michael Grant. Michael Grant and Derrick Jefferson are both guys that moved up by outslugging opponents while never learning the basics. At the upper level of the division they got exposed and never contended again. This is a crucial time for the development of Wilder and I am not liking what I am seeing, no matter how hard he punches!

I really don't see how anyone can have a historical perspective on Wilder seeing as he is only just starting to step up to world level. We have no idea how good or bad he is. His power is real and that's the only thing we know about him.

Has power, but skill-set is very raw. He'd get dismantled if he were put in with a Klitschko at this point.

Way too untested for me to endorse. Even if his power is legit, he has fought only 3rd rate opposition, and still no proof how he'll handle distance or any distress.

He has looked good against 3rd rate opposition which is not saying much. I won't be convinced until he steps up. If he doesn't at least fight a Chisora or Arreola level fighter in his next fight, I'll have serious su****ions about how far he can go. The power seems genuine though, based on how he is stopping his opponents.
