  • Mike Tyson-Evander Holyfield Pre-fight build up

  • #2
Funny Holyfield says he wouldn't fight a rapist. Tyson could've said he wouldn't fight a womanizer or juicer. I remember thinking Holyfield would win the first fight but I hadn't seen his previous fights with Bowe and Czyz. If I had, I might've picked Mike. I just thought Holyfield standing up to Tyson with his warrior spirit would be the difference.

When's the last time there was that kind of promotional coverage for a heavyweight title fight?

Evander knew from the start that extreme pressure was not what Tyson was about. To beat the bully you bully him!! Evander didn't back off he didn't go in a shell he fought hard and worked at being first! Back the bully up and then we'll see what he does under pressure. I think Evander knew exactly what he needed to do, they're werepeople in boxing who knew that Evander could do this the problem was will he run into something at the beginning and get hurt or stopped because it takes time to break down a fighters confidence and will! .........back the bully up! Holyfield had an exceptionally smart game plan but it got to the point where it wasnt boxing anymore, and it was just pure grappling techniques and doesnt compare 1 bit to the way lewis and douglas disposed of him, thats the reason tyson got so mad because this is a punching sport and holyfield knows he cant outpunch mike so has to use grappling and frustrating mike to win. Smart, but i dont like how he won. Hes taking advantage of tysons weaknesses but there not boxing techniques, its just called smothering.

Tyson was mentally weak. Once the opponent shows signs of fighting back, thats it, he loses all fighting spirit. That is why, for me, he'll probably languish at the bottom of my top 10 HW list. He had incredible talent, but if you cannot channel that talent in a proper direction, its of no use.

This is such a standard thing to say about Tyson and I don't really buy into it. Many opponents fought Tyson back and he didn't lost his fighting spirit hell even even Douglas when he got KO'd he was still trying to grab his gum shield and continue fighting even though he had no idea where he was.

Up until the second Holyfield fight Tyson always showed excellent heart. Plenty of opponents fought him back and were punished for doing so. Check out the Razor Ruddock fights, anyone who thinks that the formula for beating Tyson was simply to stand up to the bully is hopelessly misguided. It would be wise to watch some of his fights prior to incarceration; Green, Tillis, Ribalta, Tucker, Thomas, Holmes and Bruno all stood up to Tyson......many won rounds and gave Tyson problems.

In the losses to Douglas and Holyfield 1; Tyson fought till the bitter end.....and was only in praise of his opponents afterwards.

Tyson didn't quit on his stool in the second Holyfield fight. He was disqualified for biting. Granted, the act was sickening....more so than Holyfield's headbutts; but Tyson was a crazy guy that night and clearly had plenty of fight left in him, outside of the Marquess of Queensbury rules.

I'm not aware of Tyson ever quitting on his stool. In his final fight after 20 years as a pro, he was pulled out by his corner against McBride. In all his KO losses he was dropped by superb blows/combinations. Many great fighters are pulled out between rounds......Ali, Chavez, Benn jump to mind.

So was Holyfield-Tyson 2 the last big fight that the general public, not just boxing fans really cared about? If not, then what was?

Couple more after that I think, mostly the Holy-Lewis-Tyson fights. And last one was La Hoya vs Mayweather.
