    Leonard vs Duran 1

For those who can vividly remember this fight I have a question If you remember:

What was the general vibe going into this fight in terms of what fighter the experts were picking and how the fight would go? What was your prediction? Thanks.

The picks were very split. Probably more picked Leonard, but it figured since his entire career had been on national television. I picked Duran at the time. Unfortunately I also picked him in the rematch.

Thanks, Scott. Just recently watched the entire fight again and got the impression that it was seen as evenly matched. Dr Pacheco and some other guy that I didn't recognize were calling it. Both were awful and made Jim Lampley's blow by blow look good. Even though it's an old fight, I could still recognize the energy and anticipation this fight must have had.

I can't think of a fight announcer who I've ever liked less than Ferdie Pacheco.

Did fight fans at the time know of Durans condition prior to the second fight. The interview Panamaniac posted on another thread showed him already overweight and this was only a month after montreal.

How did you see the fight I had duran winning but did not understand why he coasted in the last round.

More people had Leonard winning, no question.

Duran wasn't a ruled out by any means but Leonard was certainly the favourite.

I picked Leonard to win both fights.

No one I was with or spoke to about the fight thought Leonard won! I watched the fight at the Hartford Civic Center after we ran a live card (5 bouts) and the fight could have gone either way as it ran its course but at the end everyone felt Duran did more! Duran coasted to mock Leonard who he honestly hated!! Watch Duran at the end and watch Leonards reaction. That tells you Leonard thought he came up short too.
Leonard fought well and this fight taught him how to win and how to loose and those are lessons best learned when you fight a great fighter like Duran was then! Ray.

Well, of course no one thought Leonard won.

                    Duran won, clearly.
