How bad of shape was Taylor in the fight? What if they had a rematch the following year? What if this fight were back in the 15-round era?

dont get me wrong taylor was hurt bad but there's no way you stop that fight. richard steele as a ref was not aware of the time, or so he says. well i say your a bad ref, pay attention. in the amounth of time it would have taken him to wipe taylor's gloves on his shirt and wave them together, the round would be over before chavez can hit him. AND it was a fight where you could be saved by the bell in the last round. biggest joke in boxing history. robbed taylor of the best win of his career. he dominated chavez in that fight.

Yeah agreed. And in a 15 round fight, Taylor probably gets stopped by the 13th or 14th, with the pace he was keeping and the shots he was taking. On Legendary Nights, they made it sound like the corner was telling him to pace himself, but Taylor kept going at his fast pace and was tiring late in that fight. If they had rematched sooner, maybe Taylor wins a decision or Chavez figures him out and gets to him eventually for the stoppage, but probably later in the fight.

It is funny how the reality of that fight has changed since it happened. The perception now seems to be that Taylor was dominating the fight and was robbed at the end. That is not how it was, not at all.
I remember watching the fight in a bar with a very pro-Taylor crowd, unable to hear the HBO commentary. I had it a close fight but with Chavez ahead, and felt the knockdown sealed it for him. Later, when I saw a tape of the fight and heard Lampley's call, I thought it was a different fight.
The boxing magazines at the time called it a very close fight. One said that the only travesty that night was the scorecard that had taylor up by 8 points. It is funny to me to read guys that said that then, when they say today that Taylor was a mile ahead.
A lot of people wondered why Chavez didn't fight with a "greater sense of urgency" (whatever that means) and I think it is because he was kicking Taylor's ass and knew it, didn't figure that he could be behind. I watched the entire fight in slow motion on two occasions and, when seen like that, it is very one sided for Chavez.

Taylor did not respond therefore the fight was rightfully ended. Richard Steeles job was to referee the fight not keep time. he is there to make sure both fighters are able to fight and defend themselves for the duration of the fight.

Steele was not aware of the blinking red light signaling the last 10 seconds of the round. If he was I'm sure he'd have let the fight go on. It was just in the stars for Chavez that night and people need to let it go.

Professional Referees know about this. We're not talking about a confused novice.
