  • What do you guys consider a stronger Heavyweight era?

Was it the Holmes era from '78-85 or the Tyson era from '86-'90?

The early 80s were terrible for the heavyweight division every bit as bad as its been the past few years

      I'll go with Tyson's era.

        probably Holmes era.

although Tyson would have killed Norton and most likely did away with Cooney in a bad way. I still would pick them over LHW spinks (overall, I know spinks beat Cooney) , old Holmes and decent but not special Tony Tucker. Although I guess the fact that spinks creamed Cooney is a decent argument.

I wont go as far to say they were terrible eras, the current one is bad. The HW division has rarely been strong. Louis and Rocky's era were pretty soft too.

Tyson smashing a blown up cruiser is no different than Rocky going to war with LHW's like Moore or Louis era with Galento being in the top 10 for how long??

70's and the 90's were really the only strong points. The 70's being the better of the 2 because they were all hungrier and tougher men, bar Holyfield and maybe Bowe getting a small nod. Nobody can touch guys like Frazier, Ali and Foreman though when it comes to that hunger long lost in boxing. Those men would have died in the ring and for every 90's great, there is a 70's great I'd pick to win.

        Frazier > Holyfield
        Foreman > Bowe
        Ali > Lewis

There were a lot of talented fighters, they just lived undisciplined lifestyles and wasted their talents. Much more gifted than most of today's contenders.

Mike Weaver, Dokes, Cobb and Coetzee are no more gifted than Adamek, Haye, Arreola and Povetkin.

Dokes most certainly was, as was Witherspoon, Page, Williams, Tubbs, Douglas, Bruno and Tucker. I honestly wouldn't pick one of those guys to even beat Gerry Cooney.

You are stretching out the range of years now.

No Im not. From 1978 to 1985 the fighters I named were all in the top 10 at one point or another. I don't even have to look it up, I'd bet my house on it.

And that was leaving Ken Norton out, to boot!

For me the problem with this current era isn't necessarily lack of talent (though the average depth of talent is lower than it has been for quite a while outside the champs) but rather poor matchmaking and the general lackadaisical attitude of its contenders.
