Many people used to feel like roger lacking power, deprived him of greatness. Roger was a tactician on the order of Musashi! He would piss off Mexican fighters by wearing a sombrero and calling himself a Mexican Killer.
I think that what made Roger such an incredible trainer was his responsive and open attitude to pressure. he never got rattled as a fighter and made sure Floyd always felt safe and secure and unrattled. Watching Roger and Floyd together to me was like watching a great Mongolian warrior and his horse. At a certain point in the crespular sunset, the rider and horse move together and appear as one single force.Comment

Roger was a big puncher with that right hand. His chin was what let him down. He could box well also, but his best weapon was that st8 right. That's why he did so well with Mexican fighters because the typical Mexican style can be a bit squared up, and a st8 right down the pipe works well vs that style. Of course Chavez and his iron chin was too much, but in both fights he landed HARD right hands.
In personality and genius he reminds me of Billy Martin. Both guys were scrappy! both were of the street and very smart about their sport. Billy Martin would fight at the drop of a hat but when we were kids he would stay and sign autographs far longer than most.Last edited by billeau2; 10-17-2019, 04:11 PM.Comment

Chavez strategized to bid his time, and BINGO on the button and thus began the career of Chavez the killer beast.Comment

That's because Roger could punch like he ll. Cant remember if it was the 1st or 2nd but he hit Chavez so hard he turned him around sideways. Chavez ate it up and kept coming. The 2nd fight where Roger went 10rds before retiring in corner was the fight that finished him. Just like many fighters that went rds with Chavez he ruined him.Comment
