I'm not sure anyone should have Louis too strenuously over Ali (or the reverse).

Not quite in my rankings, but their is a very strong case for Louis being the greatest of all time at heavyweight

I have Louis at no1, but have no quarel with anyone putting Ali there..
I just slightly prefer Louis's emotionless no nonsence style to Ali's show-boating.

That's sometimes all there is to it, there so evenly matched it's just down to personal preference.

The title of beating 8 Hall of Famers can be sometimes, somewhat misleading - Sharkey was past his prime, Braddock had a whirlwind of a career and hadn't fought in 2 years since beating Max, Lewis was nearing the end of his career and was best at LHW and Conn was a LHW. As was Bivins but Bivins had a terrific heavyweight resume so that's a top win. The same for Ali's 7 Hall of Fame wins; Moore was past it and was a career LHW, as was Foster.

However, comparing resumes alone, Ali trumps Louis, and that's definite.

Conn was a light heavy, yes. But he was beating good heavyweights before ever fighting Louis. He was clearly able to hold his own, even with a weight discrepancy.

                    No doubt about that.

Well, considering Conn's performance against Louis, there is no doubt he was able to hold his own at heavyweight, and then some, but defeating only two ranked heavyweights (Not sure where Pastor ranked before their 1940 fight, and not including his prior win to Gus in the lower divisions) and putting up a sterling effort against the champ is not exactly phenomenal work in the heavyweight division. Conn was a great light-heayweight.
