  • The Fighter (Micky Ward Movie)

So I went and saw the fighter tonight. Decent movie but didn't quite live up to my expectations as a whole. Im not going to spoil it for those who haven't seen it but it ranks above most boxing movies, yet below the elite. I will say that Christian Bale did a FANTASTIC job as ****ie Ecklund. Bale is quietly becoming one of this generations finest actors.

As far as the movie goes I'd rank it below the following movies at least.

    Rocky
    Cinderella Man
    Million Dollar Baby
    Raging Bull
    The Champ
    The Harder they fall
    Rocky II

For those who have seen it, what movies (if any) woulkd you put ahead of the "Fighter"?

Haven't seen it, but I thought it was pretty lame they were pushing it like he works his way up to win a world title (which he didn't, that WBU **** doesn't count). That's Hollywood hype for you. I'll probably check it out eventually.

Raging Bull is overrated in my opinion. Great movie, but "Rocky" blows it out of the water and O prefer "Cinderella man" and "Million dollar baby" to it.

I agree on that. The book was much better (Irish Thunder) and got deeper into the managerial and physical problems Ward had to come back from to get back in the boxing spotlight after some disappointing set back. But without a world title (in the movie) its harder to sell the movie, hence the Hollywood hype you just spoke about.

The cinematography nearly as good as Raging bull and the anticipation, emotion and excitement easily surpass it. On top of that Raging Bull was inaccurate and has spawned more bullshit that isn't true about LaMotta as a fighter that it surely pisses off anyone in the know.

I look forward to seeing it Jab. But as much as I enjoy boxing movies there is a feeling I get when I see them that hurts the movie. Knowing the story was dramatized and often there are bits and pieces I know as a boxing fan were not accurate. Hollywood is known to do that. I find myself bitting my tongue so I don't ruin it for the non boxing buffs I go to the theatre with. That being said I will see it and probably enjoy it.

I've always liked Micky Ward and watched him his whole career and I am glad he got a movie but hopefully we shall see the Arturo Gatti story too some day.

Maybe that why Im so partial to "Rocky", because it is fictional.

I've said this before on this forum, read the book "Barney Ross" by Douglas Century, it would make a fantastic movie!

I think fictional movies are better normally also. Even though Rocky 1 had some weak moments I think its still the best boxing movie. One part of the movie that allways seems to bother me a little is when Apollo Creed is trying to think of an opponent with his trainer and manger.

Raging bull is a good movie but maybe like you say they took many liberties with the story so it made it better.

The best baseball movie I have seen is also fictional the "Natural".
