Definitely not... It was close, but the knockdown still sealed it.. and Frazier had been doing very well a couple rounds earlier.

This. I'm pissed ESPN doesn't show this trilogy anymore as much as they use too, classic boxing period seems to have been cut off from ESPN & ESPN 2.

ESPN classics is a must have channel. I have never seen any classic matches on ESPN or ESPN 2 (maybe on espn 2 but it's been a while).

ESPN classics showed the Bowe Holyfield fights not too long ago. They also have Rocky Marciano days, Tyson days, Henry Armstrong, etc...

          ESPN Classics has them all.

Agreed. Anyone who thought that Ali won the first Frazier fight is a total fanboy. Frazier got the clear unanimous decision, and he didn't even get an extra point for the knockdown since NY was still scoring fights by rounds.

In all seriousness that's ALL he does: He comes in here periodically to make propaganda for his personal favorites and has nothing legitimate to say about anything. There's a section for that called NSB. NSB = Nuthuggers Social Brigrade (or some variation thereof). People usually come into the History Section to get AWAY from that BS.

Yeah I have little patience for "fans" with a narrow agenda. That includes nationality, race, or just irrational love/hate obsessions for certain fighters.

And the decline of NSB is also how I ended up here. To be honest I would prefer discussing the current or future of boxing rather than the past.

                      Ali-Frazier I, March 1971 ~ Battle of the Century

I watched many heavyweight fights up to about the Tyson era and many were memorable. But this was the most anticipated fight of all. We did not have cable or satellite TV in those days but the fight was broadcasted on radio. One could sense a tremendous amount of tension and excitement in the air all throughout the broadcast.

Just a short while later the fight was presented on TV. Somehow, it felt like it was a live event! Both fighters gave it their best. Soon enough a new expression would emerge from the three fight series - when a big showdown occurred in any sport, if it was a highly anticipated and well contested match, it would be called an 'Ali-Frazier' event. That tells you what an impact this fight and series had on the sport scene.
