Ron Lyle also said that Shavers punched harder than George Foreman, and the hardest puncher he ever fought.

Briggs also knocks out actual heavies while Shavers best KO's were against Young and Ellis, Young when he had only 7 wins and weighed under 200 lbs, and a 7 loss Ellis who also weighed under 200 lbs. A 200 lbs Young would eventually draw shavers later on when he was more seasoned. Shavers also was a victim of early brutal Ko's unlike Briggs. I dont count the KO over Norton who was completely shot at that time, but I guess you can count that as his best KO.
I know people will argue this, but Shavers for example, in the middle of his career fought guys with records of 1-29...wow...and people say Brigg's competition has been bad, at least theyve been over .500 and not 28 fights below it.
Wlad wouldn't let Shavers in the same post code as him

Briggs has 31 first round knock outs. 31.
Shavers 23 in 89 fights. (24 if you count being destroyed by Quarry in 1)
sooo then why not count both first and second round actual KO's thats uhhhh 28 for shavers and ummmmmmm 14 for briggs.
soooo then why not count first second and third round actual ko's and we have 34 for shavers and stilll only 14 for briggs.....
briggs is just a crappy version of forman he has no actual KO power just torque strength and weight.

in terms of who was a better fighter for me it's a pretty easy choice in shavers
in terms of power it's debatable. despite what some people say briggs can hit obviously and he's a big mfer, in terms of pure power punch for punch id lean towards briggs.
im a fan of shavers not so much of briggs, but they are quite similar to each other. both had stamina issues, shaky beards, devastating power, and never lived up to their true potential.
in a fantasy style matchup between each other, id take the guy who lands first

I'd say that Shavers hit harder. I'd say that Briggs has quicker hands. And I'd also say that there is no way that Briggs would still be there after 13 rounds with a prime Larry Holmes, he wouldnt last as long as Shavers. Holmes would do what he did to cooney against Briggs and probably get him out inside of 8 rounds. If they fought each other Briggs would have a good chance of stopping Earnie early on but if he didnt than Shavers would probably catch Briggs. I say that because Shavers could be caught cold early on. But I believe Shavers had a little better Stamina then Briggs has when he was in good shape. Shavers was a come forward fighter and Briggs would deal well with back pedaling and trying to avoid big shots.

Briggs is by far the hardest puncher in the history of the sport. He ruled for many years one of the toughest HW division we have ever witnessed. That makes him a bonafide ATG.
Hence if Vitali beats him he has a legit claim to be the GOAT.
I am sure every person knowledgeable about boxing is secretly or openly agreeing with this statement.
TS, can you stop ruining the only decent board left with your BS threads?

Jimmy Young? jimmy young was 7-3 and weighed 199 lbs when he fought Shavers the first time. The second time he actually weighed over 200 lbs and it was a draw. And when was Jimmy Young some great? Im confused. Are you just counting people you heard of as greats? When Shavers fought Young, Young was coming off of a loss to the great Randy Neuman.
This is the problem with this era. No one was dominant like Wlad. So a guy like Young gets robbed against Ali and now hes considered good. Jimmy Young was a bum. His record was 34-19-2. He had 8 less KO's than he did losses. That is not a good fighter. Not to mention that when Shavers beat him he weighed under 200 lbs.
And Jimmy Ellis another cruiser at the end of his career In the period in which Shavers fought Ellis, Ellis went 2-5-1, posting wins over greats Carl Baker and Memphis Jones, neither had a winning record, but who cares GOLDEN AGE OF HEAVYWEIGHTS!!!!
Also, credit to the guy not counting TKO's as KO's.
here is the funniest thing. Just look at the Dominique Alexander fight, which was ruled a TKO. Not a KO. Briggs not him out cold, so badly that emergency personnel rushed the ring. Not only did he not get up for the 10 count, he didnt get up the next 2 days. But that doesnt count as much as a KO....
What a joke.
