I was only 2 years old when the first Ali-Frazier fight happened. If I was old enough to see the fight, I'd of been heart broken

Barrera (my favourite fighter) losing to Marquez. Don't get me wrong I like Marquez but I thought Barrera won and with the whole knocked not being called, I was pretty sad.

The aftermath was and is extremely sad. But I've always thought it was a good stoppage. People argue the 2 seconds left and that Chavez wouldn't have gotten another punch in. But Taylor either couldn't or wouldn't respond. Its not up to the ref to make judgment on the time left, only what is happening in the there and now. If Taylor answered Steele, he wins. As it was, he was a broken down and beat up fighter who simply didn't respond.

What I find difficult to contemplate is even if he had won the fight, would he still be the same fighter? Was his spirit broken by the loss or the beating Chavez doled out? Even if he won he was still going to the hospital. Would he ever have been able to come back as the fighter he was before that fight?

Either way way its a sad, sad situation. I was rooting for Taylor that night with a bunch of friends in Cancun on spring break. We were putting it to the locals at some bar up until the end and it was heartbreaking. still, I think it was the right call.

I always respect your views my friend and Im only slightly younger than you (40), but I always wonder.......would we have really been heartbroken than, or would we have cheered for Frazier? In hindsight we have our answer. But if we were grown enough to know what was going on during that time MAYBE we would have viewed it differently. I love Ali now. But I question how I may have felt then. Looking back, much of the country had shunned Ali because of his religious beliefs and the stand he took. As a patriot I can understand that. It was a different time. since then Ali his opened doors and eyes and we've all learned more and come much further as a country than then. I still wonder though if I'd feel the same than as now. Not sure where Im going with this, but I've said it.

That is an excellent point you brought. I'm not sure how i would have felt about Ali back then, because we as people tend to be strayed by the media and its perception of celebrities and athletes. My father was anti-establishment and loved Ali. I, a former national guard, might look at Ali entirely different. Ali's fighting style I would've favored, but his stand on the war could've played a factor in my looking at his personal views. Thanks for bringing that point of view into play
