  • Why I Think Dempsey Beats Louis

I pick Jack Dempsey to stop Joe Louis inside 4 rounds.
I think Dempsey comes out of his corner, straight into his usual fast start, takes the initiative and never releases it.

I see Louis being forced on the back foot from the get go and his great jab being rendered useless ,because Dempsey closes the range so quickly.

Jack said about this mythical matchup."I would just have walked into him and thrown punches."
Asked which sort of punches ,he replied,"short ones that come around with a lot of shoulder power behind them."
Louis said ,"I would want to be very well paid for that fight"

I see Jack hurting Louis early and once he had you hurt,he usually finished the job.
If Louis could survive those hairy first four rounds, his chances would improve dramatically imo.

His boxing skills would come into play and the longer the fight went on,the better his chances of winning it.

jack Johnson called Dempsey," essentially a four rounds fighter," he said that , if you could weather the initial storm you could get into the fight
    What do you think?
    Jack?
    Joe?

    - - Well, Jack already KOed JJohnson, but Louis a whole 'nother ball of wax.

Guaranteed both Dempsey and Louis unload on Ali big time...

Joe Louis may be the worst mythical matchup heavyweight champ ever. Other than Floyd Patterson, is there a HOF heavyweight who is predicted to lose more often?

Not saying I dont get it, he was floored a number of times in his career, so we always question his chin, and think hes there to be KO'd. So we favor pressure fighters like Frazier, Dempsey, and Tyson
He could be light on his feet, but most often we see him slowly shuffling forward, plus Conn danced around him most of the fight. So we figure quick guys like Ali pick him apart.
Decent height, but not ultra big, so longer rangy guys (Lewis, Liston) could just jab and beat him from distance.
He had broad shoulders, but a skinny waist, so big brawny heavyweights like Foreman or Fury could just maul him.
In fact, the only historically great heavyweight we seem to give Louis a chance against, is the one who ACTUALLY beat him- Marciano.

      Just seems funny that way

Its a lengthy list, and they are real, but for someone whose often listed as one of the top 10-12 P4P fighters of all time, that list is relatively weak. Marciano is the only one on the list whose prime was at heavyweight who could be considered a top ATG. Over half the fighters are pre WWII guys (prior to Louis or contemporaries), but none of them are the top Pre WWII guys (Dempsey, Johnson).
Nearly half of the fighters spent a fair amount of time fighting at under 190 pounds, several of them have a prime at Lt Heavy and a few fought at under 170 pounds (modern day SMW). I think that we had to get to names like Leon Spinks kind of proves my point.

For all his accolades, greatness, and high P4P ranking, hardly anyone really thinks he would beat any of the actual great heavyweights: Johnson, Dempsey, Liston, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Vitali, Wlad, Fury, Usyk; except for Marciano, the one who actually beat him.

I think he could hang with modern guys,I just picked out ones I'm pretty confident of him beating, that doesn't mean he can't beat others.

I think Dempsey could KO any former HW Champion given the right night.

But there are plenty who could beat him, if they can survive the initial assault and out box him.

Fair enough, but who of those all time greats that I listed would you favor him to beat head to head?

I love Dempsey, but i think Louis has too much for him. Louis had a great jab and i think he would have dominated with it. Dempsey would have made a fight of it, but Louis wins.
