Jack johnson - How good was his chin?
Collapse
-
with his hugging style, he really limited the action. Chins are best tested when they are hit. A fighter named joe choynski iced him. And another named stanley ketchel dropped him. These men were well under 180 lbs. I say his punch resistance was average at best for a heavyweight.
ps Johnson was not a heavyweight when Choynski stopped him .Last edited by Bronson66; 06-24-2025, 02:27 PM.Comment

Smith dropped him hard and Johnson’s manager abruptly ended the sparring session. You may be factoring in his later opponents weight who were post Willard and mostly journeymen and forgettable.Comment

Not that I think its of any importance sparring partners sometimes drop their employers, and Smith was a good puncher
You would need to have an agenda to think it means anything significant.
Johnson sparred a further 6 rounds with3 different partners.I posted their names on here about a year ago.
No, again,I am referring to Johnson's title challengers.
You are welcome to do the math about the weights yourself if you want.Last edited by Bronson66; 06-24-2025, 02:26 PM.Comment

To pick out one champion and make it look like it was the individual's decision alone is, in my opinion, disingenuous.Comment

Jeffries was open about his discrimination against blacks .and as you say he was following the status quo.Im not singling him out ,I'm deflecting the implication which has been posted here many times byJeffries fans.[ the chief of whom has reappeared under an alt ,]that Jeffries would have been willing to drop his prejudice if the money was right.]Last edited by Bronson66; 06-24-2025, 02:58 PM.Comment

Is this your position?
In 76 fights Johnson was actually ko'd three times does that suggest to you that his chin was vulnerable?
First you have to prove the vulnerability!Last edited by Bronson66; 06-27-2025, 10:21 AM.Comment

- - Proven that McVey didn't fight anyone in 1905, so how is Jeff supposed to fight him? Was McVey sick or injured?
Munroe was easy to make since Munroe fought 6x that year of 1904 including vs JJ in 1905, so when Jeff first fought him, he became the first and only fighter to KO him. Johnson failed in comparison. Munroe finished with an 9-3-2 record with an 89% including wins over longtime contenders/champs Sharkey and Maher.
Jeff's overall career fighting approx 1/3rd of his fights vs fighters of "color" exceeds most every heavy champ in those early days.
In Short, Jeff a much more advanced H0m0 Sapiens than you'll ever be.
You mention Munroe's record that he finished with...?
What was his record when he fought Jeffries for the title? And what was McVey's record when the fight was offered to Jeffries in 1903?
If you need some help with this, just let me know.
I think you mean in short, Jeff would have drew the colorline against even me, because that's exactly what he did, didn't he?Comment
