Johnson looks too thin here. For example i doubt very much that this version of johnson would have beaten Sonny Liston. I think Liston would have tore him up. But obviously Johnson did put some weight on as his career progressed.

Johnson said he was in the shape of his life for the Jeffries fight,he weighed 208lbs,for that bout,if his given weight for the first McVey is correct,he put on 30lbs of muscle in between those fights..

Yes Johnson was at his best when he fought Jeffries. I would take that version of Johnson to beat most of the great heavyweights.

          Look how slender Jack looks.
This photo of Johnson reminds me of the oft seen photo of Tunney-Greb 1.

Tunney looks too thin for his body and you can see that he needed a couple of years to completely fill out.

That's what I think I see in Johnson above. He is not yet the man he would become.

This photo helps me confirm Johnson's mastery of boxing. McVea looks so powerful that JJ would have had to out box him, to beat him.

            - - JJ beat the shell of what used to be Jeffries who made himself sick dropping 100lbs to get back to his former fighting weight on a bird seed diet.

Like the shell of Ali that Tubby Lar who was still skinny then whooped that over 1000 young men could've whooped.

Like the shell of Earl Spencer after he went flying with his Ferrari for a nice tumble. The Ferrari engine could be salvaged with the rest sold for scrap, but nothing on Earl could be.

The quote was that Johnson was at his best ,Jeffries condition was not mentioned, but since you have mentioned it, Jeffries was down to weight 6 months before the fight, and he had over a year to get into shape.
