This one hits hard just like George did. He was my all time favorite heavyweight. Iconic person and character. To me, the last truly great moment in boxing was when he regained the title against Moorer. Thank you George for the great memories. It was hard to wake up to this.

Men today believe being mean is a sign of strength.
Big George showed the world a man can be humble and gentle and still be a powerful man.
His strength seemed pure, as though God knew the right man to empower.
We needed him in the world.

May he swap war stories in Valhalla with Sonny, Ali, Joe, Ken and all the rest of the true golden age of heavyweights.
To quote from his mentor's grave.

One of the greatest Heavyweights that ever lived.
There was a time where we thought, no one is going to beat this guy.

RIP champ... I feel like using myself as an example, 76 is not a bad age to complete our journey, so I do not feel bad like we lost something. George accomplished a lot in those years, becoming an endearing sign of strength and humility (Pep said it better). He never had to walk around like a punch drunk version of Gene Hackman, retaining his wit and charm til the end... This to me is a life well lived!
Having said all that I will miss his commentary, his presence which has always been comforting and pleasant... Sort of the Terry Bradshaw version of public appearance for boxing lol.
As a fighter Foreman was one of the greats... I say this for us... Not whether he makes any list in particular... Foreman defined a type of heavyweight that was mercy less in the ring, a wrecking crew, a counterbalance to the great boxers he faced, in addition to giving us epic battles against fellow punchers like Lyle.
In the spirit of love and humor let us quote the great Richard Pryor: "So like Foreman comes into the ring ready for Ali awww Shiaaaattt... You hear these steps, the ground shakes! He gets in the middle of the ring and looks... says 'which one the referee? good, cause Im gonna kill the other mfcker!"
Much love champ.max baer likes this.

BTW Foreman was one of the lucky ones that had a friendship and was mentored to a degree by Sonny Liston. In typical George fashion he humbly stated how much more intimidating Liston was compared to him... Liston taught him the value of presence, we can assume. Both men were scary in the ring and that was before any punches were thrown.
For a great piece of Foreman Mailer did a Playboy piece... And an interesting fact: Liston and Foreman both were great finishers but they had an entirely different style of applying pressure. Liston fought off the line. He used his reach and fast feet (chronically underestimated on his foot speed) to corner and finish... Foreman cut the ring. He would turn you by your shoulders into a corner, walk parallel to you, use angles to take real estate away... Interesting that they both had differences this way at least to me it is.max baer
