Why was Ward's hook to the body so much better than his hooks upstairs? The latter were not special at all as I remember.

Every fighter has a strong point to their arsenal, no matter what we may think of it. Wards was the left hook to the liver. Besides his toughness and that punch he would be pretty much forgotten. Bit considering his skill level, that one punch mad him not only unforgettable, but almost iconic albeit for a very short time. It put him into contendership when the rest of his skills couldn't. Wards toughness and liver punch made him. If he had one without the other he would have been just another palooka.

Ward finished Neary with a hook to the head but imo it was the earlier body punishment that broke the Liverpudlian down, similar to Marciano v Layne imo.

Micky Ward vs Shea Neary - Highlights (Irish-Liverpudlian COLLISION)

Some may disagree, but it's a good scrap to watch, so not a wasted view.

The thing with body shots is they are just as much about timing as they are about power. so it's a specific skill really.

When the talk is about natural bodypunchers, Ricky Hatton immediately comes to mind.

Among active boxers today, my vote probably goes to Inoue.

And at the other end of the weight scale, Agit Kabayel is a pretty decent bodypuncher too!

                - - Big George permanently damaged the Ali body so bad that Dundee and Doc Ferdie refused to let him rematch Foreman in Indonesia for another $10Mil 50/50 split.

Instead they went to Podunk, Ohio for Chuck Wepner who 3 fight novice Foreman KOed inside 3 rds. Wepner further whooped Ali with dozens of rabbits such that Ali was crying to the ref.

Add on Ali's rope a dope strategies, small wonder he could barely walk and talk until he couldn't do either.
