  • Boxers Shaking No After A Punch

When is the first documented case of a boxer spitefully shaking his head no after his opponent lands a punch? Was it always common? Is it just a natural instinct fighters have, or is it simply part of the show anymore that went viral with boxers, so to speak?

Not sure, I think Floyd if we are talking the recent trend, and Broner openly copied Floyd which started the trend of all the Broners that came after. Floyd always looked like he was gonna cry after he got hit, but maybe thats just his mouthpiece look.

funny story though, one of those Broners was at my gym a while back, one of these new age instagram boxers. I hit this guy w a light hook and he starts doing that head shake. He’s an idiot because I put nothing on it but he thinks it was my best shot. Next punch (to the body) I put him out he could not stand up. It really annoyed me when I saw it, cause I knew he was just copying guys like Broner.

Just macho/mental stuff. It's happened many a time over the years, although wouldn't say common. Ali did it to Frazier in their first fight (when he was getting beat up)

I expect it's more of a "You didn't hurt me" than "you didn't hit me", as when it comes to elusive fighters like Ali, or Mayweather, it's on the rare occasion they actually got hit hard and clean. And you just know, if the shake of the head says anything, it's that they likely felt the punch.

I think it means 'you didn't hurt me.'

Almost everytime it happens some announcer says 'it must of actually hurt.'

It seems to have become a boxing cliché. You know what the announcer is going to follow it up with.

Ali certainly did it, but I don't know if Clay did. I don't know of anyone else earlier.
