Interesting. I just watched Fullmer/Basilio II. I was shocked. Fullmer threw essentially four rabbit punches for about ten or eleven rounds. Instead, the boys gave their version of boxing. It was surreal to see Gene and Carmen out there feinting their hearts out like two ogres doing ballet. Of course one of Gene's bull rushes early spilled Carmen somersaulting to the canvas without a punch.

When Carmen tired and clinching became more common, the Gene we know started to come out. But I have noticed when Gene senses he has his man hurt he switches his attack to the front. He still got in some good rabbit blows, but maybe only about seven, including one to Carmen's spine between the shoulders.

Ivich may have a point. The referee stopped the fight in the 12^th with only ten seconds left. Hard to say on grainy film black & white. Carmen was not winning, but in exchanges like that where Gene is absolutely wild trying to polish him off, anything could happen. Carmen even shoved the referee a la Judah and wanted to go on fighting. Suddenly he looked fresh. His corner had to restrain him.

A guy with Basilio's heart is always going to rage when a fight is stopped. This may have been an old time method to make people retire they thought had had enough. Who knows? The original film was grainy. Hard for me to make a good determination whether to stop it.

I used to hit up the late Joe Rein, a wonderful writer and pundit on all things boxing, with silly questions. I just did not know much about the sport, this was a while back ... Ive learned a little more since then, I hope... But I asked him who was the most intimidating fighter in his opinion. Joe explained a few things: Duran had an intensity that was unmatched, and he went into some other dynamics about personalities and various fighters... I think hagler was mentioned, certainly Tyson. Then he described the most intimidating physical appearance of an individual... i am paraphrasing , Joe said it better, but he described Fullmer as looking like a large rock with lumps jutting out and about, somewhere was a head, hands... but, as opposed to being chiseled out of granite, Fullmer was described as boulder like, with many different sub boulders jutting out in all directions. Joe had seen him in an alleyway of a sort and said the effect was intense.This was a rough looking man who looked every bit as tough as he was.

And evidently a man with strategies. Robinson was easiest to hit with rabbit punches. With Carmen, Gene was quite content to box until Onions got tired. Carmen was not having any of his bulling this time. He had previously been battered by Gene in San Francisco.

Fullmer ,the natural middleweight was just too strong for Carmen,imo.

Fullmer by many accounts was very strong and big for the weight. Some guys have real density, thick bones... I think of Pit Bulls, who are not always very big, but are built in a fashion where nothing is wasted. And... as you say Fullmer was more of a natural Middle weight size wise.

The description of a man with knots fits Fullmer. He had enough scar tissue to work a circus. As Bill said, I doubt if anyone liked to fight him. Slick boxers who fought on the outside would have been his nemesis. But he never fought a really slick one like a Giardello. Robinson could no longer move all night by the time he fought the Mormon.

Yeah Canelo is solid, probably why he can fight up with little problem.

By comparison, look at Usyk: He has the weight, but his bone structure is medium and not the density of a naturally heavier fighter. For shiats and giggles, Marciano who weighed less than 200 his entire career, look at his build compared to Usyk, its not obvious that there is a difference that exceeds simply "weight" but it is there I believe it is. Now look at Liston by comparison to Usyk! Very obvious difference and Usyk presently weights more than Liston for his heavyweight fights I believe.
