By comparison, look at Usyk: He has the weight, but his bone structure is medium and not the density of a naturally heavier fighter. For shiats and giggles, Marciano who weighed less than 200 his entire career, look at his build compared to Usyk, its not obvious that there is a difference that exceeds simply "weight" but it is there I believe it is. Now look at Liston by comparison to Usyk! Very obvious difference and Usyk presently weights more than Liston for his heavyweight fights I believe.
But as he found out, someone with a long jab at the higher weights is beyond his physical ability to overcome.

Yeah in other words, usyk might weight 220. But he doesn’t have to, he could be much lighter. With Marciano it was the opposite, his body was screaming to be heavier - but 12 miles of running up and down hills in boots will bring the weight down. On top of that he’s compacted into a small but thick frame. Build is everything.

side note: marciano weighed 13.5 lbs as a baby. Heavier than Tyson, Ali and the same as George Foremans birth weight.

Duran was 250 lbs at one point!

I believe Basilio/Fullmer 1 was called the fight of the year for 1959.

Fullmer had a strategy. He carried it out, and they carried Carmen out, or at least stopped the fight in the 14th because he had enough batter on him to feed a logging camp. Of course he protested.

In the post fight interview Gene said: There was no use in two bulls going out there and locking horns, so I figured he would be coming forward like he always does. I just wanted to box on the outside, and we figured I would be faster than him on the outside. He's the toughest guy I ever fought, bar none. I'd like to give the guy another chance.

            PS

I may have said earlier that Gene never fought a slick boxer of Giardello's quality. He actually faced Giardello and it was a split draw.

Ggg isn’t gonna hang in there with Fullmer. Fullmer would be likely be fouling constantly. Holding and hitting (he was masterful at this and savage). Ggg is just a stand up boxer, he’s not ready to go 12 rounds in the pocket like that.

                An interesting take on it.

Fullmer must have held and hit more than anyone in the history of the sport.

He seems to be another of those "ignored," fighters, but ignored not only on forums but in AT rankings as well. He may be getting much more of a raw deal than some who are ignored. Maybe, like Ezzard Charles, someday his reputation will rise again.

But can you imagine what a fight between Fullmer and LaMotta would have descended to?
Damn... Lol that would have been plum ugly! Imagine the announcer for that fight? "Lamotta throws an elbow jab, Fullmer counters with a head jab." It would have been a meeting of two distinct variations of "tough." South Bronx, big city, versus Mormon farm boy tough... Morris ave versus downtown Ogden!

Cuts would probably be Gene's downfall in mythical AT matches. He had more scar tissue than than marshall Matt Dillon's left shoulder. Gene always looked like he had just healed up from a match with a meat grinder.
