  • Fullmer/ Robinson I, II, III, and IV

These were rather important fights, and not bad at all. We are seeing Robinson well into deterioration but still formidable. Age starts to hamper his mobility as the fights proceed. Of course in fight 2 he knocks Fullmer out with a single left hook they call perfect and knocks him out good.. That is famous. I believe Robinson in truth won their third fight but was denied the decision. Close fights. Rough. Fullmer is always rough in every fight he has with anyone.

In fact, Fullmer may be the consistently dirtiest fighter I have ever witnessed. He is also really tough. Nothing but a KO punch can stop him from moving forward ineluctably. He throws people around, launches headbutts, elbows and shoulders incessantly, and worst of all is addicted to rabbit punching. In their four fights he rabbit punched Robinson a total of 383 times that I counted!!!

Man, that just goes to show just how different the old days really were, and that was only in the 1950's! They probably considered themselves quite civilized compared to the older days. Or did the referee have his house and car bet on Fullmer? Gene would be disqualified these days by round 2. I'm going to give you that much, in case you don't watch. If you do, have you ever seen a fighter as consistently dirty as Fullmer, if you have ever watched him? Notice that Robinson begins to retaliate with rabbit punches himself, though halfheartedly. I think he was merely giving Gene warnings himself but not really a tit for tat.

Robinson also has to tie that right hand up frequently to stop the rabbits. Gene is a one handed rabbit puncher. Just the right.

Fullmer was dirty , I never liked him or his mauling style , but he was certainly tough . He met his match when he couldn't outmuscle Tiger.

A man with Fullmer's style is not going to have a long prime in general. Don't know if he could have taken Tiger when they were fresh or not. I don't know much about Tiger. He seems to be another of those "ignored," fighters, but ignored not only on forums but in AT rankings as well. He may be getting much more of a raw deal than some who are ignored. Maybe, like Ezzard Charles, someday his reputation will rise again.

But can you imagine what a fight between Fullmer and LaMotta would have descended to?

Agreed. Hopkins reminded me of him at times, in terms of his tactics

I thought Hopkins was cynically and calculatedly dirty, Fullmer more oafish in his approach.Giardello hated Fullmer after their head colliding brawl.

Fullmer is not a dirty fighter. He is better described as ******. Be that as it may, he is probably under represented on all time lists and in fans' minds. In other words, ignored. Gene would likely, in my opinion, be able to simply walk down many champions.

Dempsey was not a mauler from what I have seen, that maybe being a misnomer. Dempsey got opponents out of there as quick as he could. He usually didn't have time to maul. Gene was a mauler, the quintessential mauler. He wanted to wrestle as much as box. Shoulders, head, elbows and rabbit punches came in combination so fast that opponents were blown from their jockstraps. Stamina was his forte. He just walked them down, taking everything they had to offer, inflicting his own, until their tongues were hanging out like dogs.

I wonder where people think he stands AT. No one likes him, apparently. No wonder. He was much better to watch than a runner though. Gene is pure history, the best exemplar we have of constant, workman-like fouling.

I believe Fullmer may have been the recipient of some home cooking from referees? My best buddy Klompton[lol], certainly seems to think so.
Somebody needs to explain this scoring to me. Gene Fullmer 159 lbs drew with Ray Robinson 159 lbs by SD in round 15 of 15

I am going to watch some more Fullmer fights and see if he fouls everyone else constantly like he did to Robinson.

Interesting. I just watched Fullmer/Basilio II. I was shocked. Fullmer threw essentially four rabbit punches for about ten or eleven rounds. Instead, the boys gave their version of boxing. It was surreal to see Gene and Carmen out there feinting their hearts out like two ogres doing ballet. Of course one of Gene's bull rushes early spilled Carmen somersaulting to the canvas without a punch.

When Carmen tired and clinching became more common, the Gene we know started to come out. But I have noticed when Gene senses he has his man hurt he switches his attack to the front. He still got in some good rabbit blows, but maybe only about seven, including one to Carmen's spine between the shoulders.

Ivich may have a point. The referee stopped the fight in the 12th with only ten seconds left. Hard to say on grainy film black & white. Carmen was not winning, but in exchanges like that where Gene is absolutely wild trying to polish him off, anything could happen. Carmen even shoved the referee a la Judah and wanted to go on fighting. Suddenly he looked fresh. His corner had to restrain him.
