Not a lot of chatter around here about this great fighter. Lost to all time great Sal Sanchez after a great battle in his 14th fight. Beat all time great Wilfredo Gomez in his 2!st fight and went on to have a magnificent career beating many top fighters over several divisions.

Why does no one talk about Azumah Nelson?

He was an outstanding fighter. When I gave my all time P4P fighters in my lifetime. Sal was #5 on my list. Knowing this man died at age 23. wins over Nelson, Gomez, Lopez, Laporte. the man hasn't reached his prime yet. I know this is about Nelson but had to give a shout out to the great Sal.

Ever-underrated in relation to his greatness, and one of my youth's heroes.
I can only say that the day when he knocked Jeff Fenech out in the rematch - organized in Australia because of the infamous draw in the first fight (which, incidentally, was a perfectly acceptable result in my view) - was one of the happiest moments in the history of my boxing passion.
Azumah showed to Fenech who the man was, without the malaria who had affected him before their initial meeting.joseph5620

Would Sanchez have moved up and beat Mancini, Bramble, Arguello, Chavez later on and others? Who can say? But what he did accomplish in his young life was certainly exceptional.

He was as far from an inexperienced novice as the boxing commentators making that claim could be from those who know better. Fat Colonel Bob couldn't keep his mouth shut for 15 rounds.max baer likes this.

I can see several reasons why: 1. He didn't finish the career cycle. When we see a fighter at all phases of a career we know him better, there is more material to work with, we have seen him tested more thoroughly.
2. He just never was massively popular, though he had a very fine reputation, he never transcended boxing, never captured peoples' imaginations, just a surprisingly good fighter. He may have done enough for the lower end of ATGness.
3. He did not dominate the field, wipe out his diviision (I could be corrected here, maybe).
