Since heavyweights of bygone eras were so light...

Fury's dad said on an interview that he was best around 18-19 stone. He said that when Fury dropped to 17-18 stone he lost his punch power quite a lot so that extra stone of weight made a big difference to him and his punch power.
if we go back to dempsey's era you couldn't carry loads of muscles as the fights went on all f**ing day! they needed to be slender to have stamina.
ps sorry about using stones but i cannot do kilos as i grew up doing stones and feet and inches it's too late now to change.Last edited by max baer; 05-21-2023, 03:00 PM.Comment

Something else to think about. Toney weighed a good bit when he fought heavyweight but he was never a natural heavyweight. Weight is just one aspect of size. Liston to me, and perhaps Ike Ibeuchi had the most perfect physique for a heavyweight.Comment

Good subject, but it is called cherry picking. You could always find a few super heavyweight matchups, if you look hard enough and that is your only criterion. I think you could find a match between two Episcopals, if you tried hard enough.
Sure, a freak matchup here and there. But does anyone claim that, as a whole, yesteryear's heavies were as big as today's? I never heard it claimed. I think the reason is you can't cherry pick that data.
Giant boxers of yesteryear were without fail mediocre, as if conforming unconsciously to the pejorative myth about giants in boxing. Buddy Baer, Willard and Carnera all fit the mediocre category quite comfortably IMO, and they are the best of the giants of yesteryear. So, yes, while a few big (sluggards not sluggers) did compete against each other, it was a rare freak show, not the norm. These days 465 lbs is not an awesome lot of meat for a heavyweight fight anyway.Comment

the skillset is really underwhelming. I guess for a man his size thats impressive. P4p though he only is looking so good because of the opponents he’s in with. Wilder made him look like George Benton because Wilder just swings and telegraphs everything he throws, even his jab. His balance is bad. He just hits hard and is willing to hit someone hard as well. Thats it. He’s got very little craft or thought put into his style.Comment

Thats because he fought most of his career heavier. Had he adjusted and became strong at a lighter weight, it would have benefitted him. I know genetically he almost canât get ripped. Heâs skinny fat. So he builds muscle slower and gains wait easier. Probably a side effect of being born premature. Where Fury does shine is his ring IQ and his personality. Heâs got the right mentality for boxing and holds an edge mentally over the current pack.

Funny thing I've known him since he was a boy and as a 16 year old he was built like a gymnast he was extremely muscled for his age just like iron mike he was very strong and muscled for his age. But he never took seriously things like diet and body weight. He used to balloon up after a fight and down again for his next fight. He had very little in the way of sports science that the klitschko's have been educated in. I think they both have sports science degrees. Fury only took his diet seriously in his comeback. Before that he only trained hard, and he did train very hard, just that after a fight he'd not look after himself too good.
Most of the time before his comeback his training for a fight was like fat camp as he says so himself. it is his culture he doesn't come at boxing like the sports science and aba mindset.Comment
