    Know anything more about Dooley?

    I'll check out BoxRec.

    [EDIT]

Well he certainly knew Peter Jackson.

He seems to have had Bob, Ruby Fitzsimmons' number.

    A GUESS

It seems most likely Dooley only saw Johnson fight once, against Burns. (Unless of course he traveled to the US or France.)

That (Burns fight) was probably JJ at his very best.

Not sure how much power his testimonial should be given.
More than a man who never saw Johnson in a championship fight,a man who was dead before Johnson won the title, I'd say!
Why would you assume Dooley only saw Johnson fight once?
Are you unaware Johnson fought 3 times in Australia?
Apart from the Burns fight in1908.
    Johnson fought.
    Bill Lang in Melbourne 1907.
    Peter Felix in Sydney 1907.
As a leading Australian pugilist of his day,and only in his middle forties when these fights occurred, I find it entirely probable Dooley saw at least one of those two other contests, and possibly both of them.

No I wasn't. When I looked up Johnson I deliberately looked to see if he had had multiple Australian fights. So of course I checked the fights immediately surrounding the Burns fight.

When I saw that he had been in England five months earlier (Taylor), and in the States five months before that (Flynn I) it didn't cross my mind to look further back for any Australian fights. Just didn't think that a Negro fighter in 1907 would have that kind of traveling capabilities/financing.

Getting to Australia must have been expensive, so thought I.

      Thanks for the correction.

I would agree, I would suspect Dooley to have viewed all three.

P.S. We would have to assume he (Dooley) couldn't have learned much from the Felix fight.

Made me think of something else.

Johnson was Australia in 1907 while Tommy Burns was beating up the same white multuplie times.

This must be the period where they same Johnson hounded Burns for a title shot, by chasing him around the world.

When Burns finally realizes he needs Johnson, they make three round trip tickets part of the deal.

JJ must of thought, phuck 'um I'm not paying to go all the way back down there.

As we know Johnson received a pittance for his title challenge whereas Burns got $30,000 to defend against him.Johnson ,once he was champ ,now 30 years old then decided that was his price too and ,with a few exceptions for gimmees, adhered to that.Percentages of the movie rights were often included as part of the deal too.

I use an inflation calculator on the 30K. It only went back to 1913. The figure came out to one million (in buying power today).

But here's the thing, I don't know what kind of 'market basket' they use to factor the buying power with, but I decided to use just the average house price from 1908. Usually falling in the $2,500 to $3,000 range. (Using one item is considered incorrect to do, but house prices are relevant to your wealth today.)

With that said, the 30K in 1913 turns into 10-12 average price houses. --> Yet today, a million dollars gets you only two to four average price houses (in the USA).

So anyway, using my bad social science approach that 30K seems to be worth more in the neighborhood of three or four million in buying power today.

                A good payday.

Siler never saw Johnson when Johnson was champion how many times did Siler see Jackson? Jackson only fought in the US 5 times twice against nobodies twice when he was a physical wreck and got wiped out,so Siler had to evaluate Jackson on his 61 rounds snore bore against Corbett.

                    - - Near I see JJohnson never got near 30K for most title defenses against a cast of middlewts, and white dopes until his Jeffries Jackpot.

                    I'm open to correction.
