What fightes say and do changes with a big purse. I could fill a forum with fighter's saying one thing then doing a complete 180 in the headlines. Obviously Johnson was a contender for a brief time in 1903-1904 when Jeffires was active but there wasn't a big purse for the fight. And when the big purse was there in 1910 he magicaly chaged his views like all fighters do.

The Hart loss took Joshnon and his purse potential way down. Before then he was not vauled as much as Fitz and Corbett were in 1902-1903.

    THE END.
No, that is not true. The guy said specifically that he had no plans to fight Johnson. The exact quotation was he wouldn't fight him "even if he licks the Japanese army."

He made it clear that he didn't want to lose the title to a Black man.

He only caved when the White superiority fans badgered him into standing up for his race.

We both know the purse would have been more than Jeffries got for Munroe, which was when the fighting audience wanted Jeffries to take this fight (instead of Munroe).

Once again, Hart had nothing to do with it. I quoted Jeffries THE DAY BEFORE THE JOHNSON/HART FIGHT saying that he would NOT fight Johnson if he won.

Sure, we can end it now.

You made a statement I asked you to prove it,at which point your rectum fell out.
To cover up your cowardice you used the excuse
      I will be abusive ?
You are pathetic and any vestige of credibility and respect you may have possessed has now irrevocably vanished.
If you can't take the heat, stay the **** out of the kitchen!

            • Apparently old Jack didn’t think too highly of Wills either. Claims he was mediocre and undeserving of a title shot. The great trainer Ray Arcel said something similar of Wills, noting he was a good journeyman, nothing more.

Was this written before or after Dempsey-Tunney II?

I am wondering if this was before or after Sharkey schooled Wills.

It appears to be written after Tunney/Dempsey I and before the rematch.

                    Wow that's what I thought.

So it's after Wliis lost to Sharkey I suspect because Wills lost to Sharkey just a month after Dempsey-Tunney I.

He did a good job in predicting thst Dempsey would lose the rematch. Allthough Dempsey looked horrible in the '26 fight so that was not to long a reach.

There are two different accounts of what took place when Wills was briefly employed by Johnson as a sparring partner. One was that Wills got the best of Johnson in sparring and was fired. The other is on page 66 of this same book I quoted. Johnson states: "During my training period Harry Wills appeared on the scene, seeking a place as sparring partner. I engaged him, but he remained only a few days. He proved wholly unable to stand the grind and was compelled to acknowledge that the ordeal was too much for him. He returned to New Orleans." Wills had also turned down a later offer to be a sparring partner for Dempsey.
