Don't matter where JJ wanted the fight, he clearly asked in his moment with considerably more knowledge of what he needed, and that was asking permission from the judge assigned to his case. He feared extradition, full stop.

Until I see evidence contrary, JJ rejoined Rube Foster's team for his incognito Canadian adventure.

Now, don't you have some snails you can kick around before dispatching in the frying pan?
When JJ first fled the US to Canada the Canadian government knew where he was but refused to detain him, not because they didn't have an extradition law, but because he had a purchased ticket for England and was merely a traveler passing through Canada.

The Canadians made it clear to both Johnson and the US Government that if Johnson tried to reside in Canada he would be refused and returned to the United States.

This was the same stand Great Britian took when JJ arrived in England. He ws allowed to travel through but when he tried to stay (and the US Govt starting making complaintive noises about his presence in England) England warned JJ that he had to move on but did not try to detain him.

So Johnson was not in a poistion to return to, and stay in Canada, unless he got some kind of premission from the Canadian government first.

I still can't understand why he would approach a Nebraska judge. Need more info.

      - - Canadian authorities didn't know he was in the country until the team made all the way East to Montreal, where indeed he did have England passage.

It's a minor point, but almost always when one makes a request to return a fugitive to the other, it is almost always granted regardless of extradition agreements.

This was suspended during the Vietnam war as many draftees fled to live in Canada, political refugees instead of wanted fugitives. As fugitives go, JJ was microscopic save for his name that was big polarizing stuff in his day. Maybe be like Bernie Sanders fleeing to Canada during the McCarthy era.

Well, if I ranked him among the 25 best of the modern era, that alone should peak your curiosity. You're a good, knowledgeable poster here, and mark my words; there is ALWAYS more to learn as we journey through this mortal coil. Luther McCarty, had he lived, would have reigned from about 1914 - 1919, and was already an unrivaled prodigy in a very solid division.

if we take other fighters who are the same size as Patterson. Like Dempsey Tunney Louis Walcott Charles. I'm not sure if he wins any of those fights.

I agree, except I see him even money against Walcott. Still, Dempsey Tunney Louis and Charles is quite a gauntlet for anybody, regardless of size or era.

could not agree more. I didn't name Johnson Holmes Liston Ali Lewis Holyfield Tyson Bowe. so, as we can see Patterson was a good fighter but far from the top 15.
