Choynski advances to round two. Up next is Gus Rulhin and a fighter I know a little about in Ed Smith. Smith mixed is with Jackson, Maher, Goddard, and Godfrey. He was a contender of the times.
Ruhiln get a top 4 seed and arguably edged other others in the tournament who did not. I think he would TKO Smith in the mid rounds. Ruhlin via 8th round TKO.

To be clear for all....
We are talking about Denver Ed Smith (Edward Corcoran) b. 1865 and NOT Ed "Gunboat" Smith b. 1887.
Gunboat was of a later vintage.
I'll pick the Akron Giant by late rounds KO.

Denver Ed was a serious boxer, his win over Goddard is arguably better than any Gus had.Gave Jackson a good battle as he did with Godfrey(great win by George) and wins over Mike Cleary, Clow and Matthews. Points win for Ruhlin is my pick.Willow The Wisp likes this.

Martin like Godfrey was another fight that John L Sullivan missed out on.

I did just a little research for this one. I know a bit about Ruhlin but other than a name on records and looking at his own record I did not know much about Smith.
Probably a silly question, but, does Edward Corcoran have any relation to Peter Corcoran?
Another question, why is it alternative champions don't get even so much as a mention in lists and such? I'm not saying Eddie had a legitimate claim but isn't it more historically accurate to say X had the most legitimate claim while Y and Z also claimed the title?
I'll have to go with Gus. There's just more recognizable names on his resume. Peter got him and no doubt the book will cover that, but also, anyone who does well against Sharkey and Hart is pretty good in my opinion. Hart's decently underrated but not a bad HW at all. You can say but Burns though and I would say Burns is criminally underrated.
I really respect Smith's love for a if I don't stop you, you win, even if I battered you all over, kind of fights. Takes guts and a strong self belief.
So I'm going to go with Gus by way of split or mixed decision. One of those where, for example, one paper may score for Ed but two scored for Gus.
