what people donât realize about Armstrong, Frazier and Marciano for example - is they actually wouldnât box on the outside at all. They got low and ONLY seeked to get inside. This is how they beat tall fighters all the time. If the tall fighter couldnât deal with it - it was often over from the first round onwards.
Bowe is a decent inside fighter for his size, but heâs no master, he doesnât move his head inside or make fighters miss. Because heâs tall he doesnât smother anyone either.
Tua and Tyson were built like inside fighters but never developed the skills.
you look at guys like Benton, Carter, Griffith etc at middleweight - they could all fight inside very well.
I think it was Stewart who said in response to how a boxer should deal with a short pressure fighter with inside fighting capability - âjust be a better match maker, and donât make those fights happenâ. In the case of Ali vs Frazier it was public demand that asked for it, in reality nothing in Alis style was made to deal with a Futch styled pressure fighter. Only Alis heart made the fights competitive. He remained on the ropes most of the fight and used savvy to survive and find openings. In this position he was unable to fire back punches with real steam on them since Joe kept pushing him back.
