People loved Gatti and he wasn't famous because he was beating top level guys asses
But I understand how fans want more per year.
A top level guy has to ask himself what does beating this guy get him (besides a pay check)
If the answer is a flimsy one, chances are the opponent is too ?
I'd say a top level guy should look at the rankings and see who's available in the bottom half at least.
To dig up some unknown guy, nah.
No one with single neuron ranks Gatti as an ATG. He ain't even HoF imo. It's getting funny that you always mention about Gatti. Is he your third love after GGGeezer and Fury?

Gatti will get in because the word "fame" is in the title. Sometimes that's enough, e.g. Ray Mancini.
Expect the Rode Island kid to get in soon as well, for the same reason.

Vinny had a huge following. And while his record shouldn't get him in.....being the hall of fame as you pointed out....I'm still not sure he'll make it. Having trained with him on a few occasions and having been to so many of his fights part of me wants it to happen, but the other side tells me it's just not right. We'll see.

Just saying
Why was Gatti famous ?
Not a single credible W yet had rabid fans.
Never once even hinted he was an ATG, although had he fought way back when , WHO KNOWS
Historians thought the movies that came out were top notch.
Ditto cars and most everything else.
Looking back, ALL OF THAT SHlT was inferior.
Again, no way of them to know any better.
Apply this logic to boxers of the day.
SRR's skill may have travelled through the era's.
That is what ATG is all about.

Mike Tyson is the goat in this department. He is the second most famous boxer "ever" and not even top 100 p4p atg.
Maybe I exaggerated a bit, but defeat is defeat. If you think he won one of the fights, you can also think Norton beat him. Similar things.
Being humbled is beyond losing
Mosley vs Margarito was a humbling loss (a most satisfying loss )
Hagler vs Hearns was a humbling loss (being carried back to his corner )
Foreman vs Frazier was a humbling loss (bounced poor Joe all over the ring)
