July 2009, boxing's most tragic month?

In July 2009 boxing lost 3 great fighters.

on July 1st boxing lost the great Alexus Arguello to suicide after years of depression and drug abuse.

On July 11th we lost the legendary Arturo Gatti under strange circumstances, but was also ruled a suicide.

July 25th Vernon Forrest was shot to death chasing the thieves who had just robbed him.

Has there ever been a more tragic month in boxing history?

Is there anything more tragic, than a young boxer losing his life in the ring?

This happened 4 times in October, 1930 - to Battling Nelson (no, not that one!), Nick Pozega, Garl Baldus and Sammy DiSalvo.

I can't think of another month with 4, or more, ring fatalities!

          - - Alexis may have had depressions here and there as we all do, but anyone believing suicide is just a convenient tool for The Sandinistas who controls that corrupt country.

Sorta like Mafia controlled Eddie Machen "fell" out a window, or Zorra Folley "fell" into an empty swimming pool, or Sonny Liston summoned to Congress for testimony on boxing suddenly "shot" himself up with an overdose of heroin with his wife conveniently out of town.

Gatti was drunk and on drugs as he usually was in retirement, so that complicates that ruling.

Vern just made a bad snap decision in a critical moment.

Sorry but on this election night I got to break your balls on this one. You slip into pure political rhetorical BS and it's wonderful. So you get called on it.

I was with you right up until you got to the bold; need to work on your word choice.

"Bad" is a bad word to use when describing 2nd degree murder. Murder is a touch worst than bad.

All 2nd degree murder is a "snap" decision.

"Critical moment" is my favorite. You just can't soften murder any more than to describe it as merely a critical moment. Makes me think right after he said: "Oh darn, I wish I hadn't done that."

And you lead the whole darn thing with "just" --> please explain to me how the phuck something else could have been worst than murder that it deserve to be mitigated with " Vern just . . ."

            Just the phuck what?

                - - Not sure your point, but I was comparing alleged suicides with background info indicating criminal murderous intent.

There was no intent to murder Vern since they could've done so at ground zero of the encounter. Going after armed thugs fleeing into the woods where they can ambush Vern rushing in face forward with no defense could be seen as suicidal, but to me more like a bad snap judgement by Vern. I'm not blaming Vern for his instinctive judgement, but rather noting he wouldn't be dead but for his rush to judgement.

Has nothing to do with the murder charges against the felons

Zora Folley, a friend of his, and two women were drinking around a hotel pool. Folley and the man started wrestling, and drunk Zora fell and hit his head on the side of the pool. Zora was considered a "family man" (he had nine kids with his wife) so getting drunk at a hotel with a woman and another couple wasn't something the sporting press at the time tended to play up.

Sonny Liston testified before Congress in 1964. He died six years later in Las Vegas while his wife went to visit her mother after Christmas.

Eddie Machen had been in and out of mental institutions and likely had CTE (along with his other problems). Gatti likely had CTE as well. (Micky Ward believes he currently has it. He's agreed to donate his brain after his death.) NFL players with CTE tend to kill themselves at a brisk clip.

Lol. You are a treasure. That's fer sure.
Too many Nick Tosches crime fiction novels? Zero inside information in those fables. Liston, Machen and Folley were all accidents. So was Marciano; to head that off. As a Historian, I have only time for what is factual. Got a follow-up? Don't waste it on me. Ain't gonna bite but this once. People do love their bigfoot stories though.
