Mayweather, Tyson, Fury, Ali, Canelo: 100 greatest boxers of all time ranked
By Sam Pearce
October 14, 2022
Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, Tyson Fury, Manny Pacquiao and Muhammad Ali are just some of the names that will jump to people’s minds when the greatest boxers of all time are mentioned, but who is the greatest of all time?
Boxing is a sport that has an abundance of greats across all weight divisions and time periods, but trying to rank them is incredibly hard given all the varying factors.
Thankfully, respected boxing stats website Boxrec have compiled the list of the greatest fighters across all divisions and time periods, so let’s dive into the list and see who they believe to be the greatest boxer of all time.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 100-91
100. Charles Humez
99. Johnny Indrisano
98. Sumbu Kalambay
97. Vitali Klitschko
96. Joey Maxim
95. Jack Berg
94. Jimmy Bivins
93. Bobo Olson
92. Nicolino Locche
91. Kosta Tszyu
There’s some huge fighting records in here, such as Jack Berg’s 157 wins in his 192 bouts, with Nicolino Locche also notching up over 100 wins in his career. The biggest name in this bracket has to be Vitali Klitschko, with the Ukrainian a multiple heavyweight world champion.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 90-81
90. Nino Benvenuti
89. Jack Carroll
88. Dave Shade
87. Lou Brouillard
86. Pernell Whitaker
85. Gustav Scholz
84. Randolph Turpin
83. Mikkel Kessler
82. Luis Rodriguez
81. Shane Mosley
Again we see some unholy amount of wins with Dave Shade registering 156, Lou Brouillard with 101 and Luis Rodriguez with 107. However, we are still yet to see an undefeated boxer on this list, although it’s surely only a matter of time before we see someone with that coveted 0 in their losses column.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 80-71
80. Eddie Booker
79. Erik Morales
78. Johnny Dundee
77. Rocky Kansas
76. Mike Tyson
75. Vernon Forest
74. Billy Petrolle
73. Willie Pep
72. Wilfred Benitez
71. George Foreman
This group of 10 fighters has a lot to unpack. Firstly there’s Johnny Dundee and Willie Pep recording over 200 wins in their careers with 201 and 229 respectively. However, we then have George Foreman and Mike Tyson way down on the list. Iron Mike is many people’s go to for the GOAT, so to see him outside the top 75 is mind boggling.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 70-61
70. Antonio Cervantes
69. Marcel Thil
68. Sammy Angott
67. Jersey Joe Walcott
66. Ted Kid Lewis
65. Mickey Walker
64. Terence Crawford
63. Joey Giadrdello
62. Kid Gavilan
61. Gene Tunney
Given the era some of these men fought in, you’d be forgiven for not knowing who most were and they they’re higher up than the likes of Foreman and Tyson. However, Terence Crawford is hot property in the sport, becoming the first undisputed champion in the light welterweight division since Tszyu, becoming the first man to hold all four major word titles simultaneously since Jermain Taylor in 2005 and is one of only eight male boxers to do so.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 60-51
60. Duilio Loi
59. Ismael Laguna
58. Gennady Golovkin
57. Mike McCallum
56. Carl Froch
55. Alexis Arguello
54. Ike Williams
53. Tommy Loughran
52. Thomas Hearns
51. Larry Holmes
There are more and more recognisable names on this list for those that aren’t boxing encyclopaedias, with the likes of Carl Froch making his appearance in the ranking, however the biggest name has to be Gennady Golovkin, who lost his trilogy fight with Canelo Alvarez last month in one of the biggest fights of the year.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 50-41
50. Tyson Fury
49. Joe Frazier
48. Pete Latzo
47. Carlos Ortiz
46. **** Tiger
45. Lou Ambers
44. Felix Trinidad
43. Jackie Fields
42. Wladimir Klitschko
41. Jack Britton
Now we start to see some big hitters on the list, with Muhammad Ali’s rival Joe Frazier and one of the biggest heavyweights in the world today, Tyson Fury, with The Gypsy King looking to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion for over 20 years.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 40-31
40. Oscar De La Hoya
39. Harold Johnson
38. Mike Gibbons
37. Sonny Liston
36. Evander Holyfield
35. Lloyd Marshall
34. Julio Cesar Chavez
33. Jake LaMotta
32. Emile Griffith
31. Gene Fulmer
Some of the bigger names in this list include Sonny Liston, and fellow American Evander Holyfield, with the latter renowned for his rivalry with Mike Tyson which saw Iron Mike bite a chunk of his ear off during a bout.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 30-21
30. Roberto Duran
29. Roy Jones Jr
28. Rocky Marciano
27. Young Corbett III
26. Manny Pacquiao
25. Joe Calzaghe
24. Ezzard Charles
23. Saul Canelo Alvarez
22. Charley Burley
21. Jose Napoles
One of the more underrated British fighters of all time in Joe Calzaghe gets some recognition in this list, being ranked 1 place above Manny Pacquiao, the Brit’s perfect 46-0 record definitely goes some way to his ranking in this list, with Saul Canelo Alvarez narrowly above him.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 20-11
20. Sammy Mandell
19. Andre Ward
18. Barney Ross
17. Bernard Hopkins
16. Harry Greb
15. Floyd Patterson
14. Ray Leonard
13. Lennox Lewis
12. Tony Canzoneri
11. Archie Moore
There’s some ridiculous fighting records on this section of the list, with the biggest name arguably Lennox Lewis, The Lion was undisputed heavyweight champion in 2002, with no other man being able to achieve the feat since, showing us the size of his accomplishments when you consider some of the greats who have come after him.
Top 100 greatest boxers of all time: 10-1
10. Marvelous Marvin Hagler
9. Holman Williams
8. Joe Louis
7. Henry Armstrong
6. Benny Leonard
5. Jimmy McLarin
4. Carlos Monzon
3. Muhammad Ali
2. Floyd Mayweather
1. Sugar Ray Robinson
Floyd Mayweather normally is criminally underrated in lists such as this, with a perfect 50-0 record, taking the sport of boxing to obscene heights, he certainly deserves more respect. So to see him ahead of Muhammad Ali is huge for him, however, neither of those greats were worthy of top spot in Boxrec’s opinion, with Sugar Ray Robinson, who recorded a staggering 109 knockouts in 174 victories, being crowned the GOAT of boxing.
All-Time Rankings was never one of them.
