Carmen Basilio v Jose Napoles?

Tough... Naples was a technical marvel and Basilio had technical chops to spare but was far and wide the toughest damn onion farmer to ever come out of the empire state.
Could make a case for either guy... I love how Cuban fighters culturally are raised in the sport and seem to have foundational skills... Didn't basilio lose to Gavilan? Lew Genkins was perpetually underated... I guess I will go with Naples.

I always felt Napoles is overrated. This happens in boxing all the time. How great is Choclatito now that we have had a better chance to see him? Just another fighter. But a few years ago they could not get enough of proclaiming how great he was.
Talk about obscure nonentîties--if they were, then Napoles fought them. He beat exactly no one of note. On the other hand, he had the pîss slapped out of him by Basilio's nephew. So no, he cannot beat the man who beat Sugar Ray Robinson once, not even close. Napoles is not a top 10 welterweight in my opinion, which is probably not the consensus opinion. What do I care?Last edited by The Old LefHook; 06-02-2022, 05:54 PM.

time: 0:55 | referee: Jack Milicich 2-1 | Tony DeSalvo 2-1 | Joe Palmer 2-0
World Boxing Council World Welter Title
World Boxing Association World Welter Title
A bad cut over Napoles left eye forced the stoppage. Napoles was also cut over the right eye.
NO SLAPPING WHATSOEVER.
Napoles beat the **** out of him in the return.
Do you ever bother to read up on these fights,or do you just take the result and run with it?
Napoles beat good solid challengers like;
Charles
Muniz x2
Menetrey
Josselin
Lewis x2
Lopezx2
Gonzalez
Gray
Pruitt
And champions
Griffith
Cokes x2

What happened in the rematch?
Was it something like this?
time: 1:53 | referee: **** Young 6-1 | Lee Grossman 5-1 | Larry Rozadilla 4-2
World Boxing Council World Welter Title
World Boxing Association World Welter Title
Backus was knocked down twice in the 8th round. After the 2nd knockdown, the referee took Backus to the ring doctor, who stopped the fight on a cut in the corner of Backus' left eye.
Notice who was well infront when the fight was stopped?
You're calling me a half wit?
You who said if Conteh had fought Ahumada he would have lost!
News flash he DID fight him and he WON!Last edited by Ivich; 06-04-2022, 04:23 PM.

There lies a rub:
Half of Basilio's fights might be stopped on cuts today, while Napoles's fight might well have been left to continue had it been the late 1940's or early 50's.
Which 'cuts rules' are they fighting under, the TV era or the somke filled arena?
P.S. Yes I believe the Paret fight had a bigger impact, on when and why fights are stopped, than the Kim fight. Had it not happened on live TV it wouldn't have changed things, just one more dead fighter with a two line newspaper mention.Last edited by Willie Pep 229; 06-05-2022, 08:36 AM.them_apples likes this.
