I doubt Sly would take the risk.

Yeah Johnson was a throughbred grappler. If hes allowed to grapple then yeah he’s got a good chance of beating anyone. If he isn’t then that changes everything, esp with attached thumb gloves.

edit billeau beat me too it

Johnson was much more than “grappling”. There is a reason he was termed a defensive genius. That article illustrates how he was not holding but instead blocking body blows while fighting on the inside. When his opponents brought their punches up to his head he avoided these as well. Very high level boxing.

                - - Grappling cost him the Hart fight because he kept stopping Hart from fighting.

Guess he wasn't good enough to fight and beat Hart outright that cost him the Jeffries title shot before Jeffries retired. The fight was an unofficial eliminator in the day.

Ignorance is abroad and present on this thread! Johnson turned Hart's face into raw hamburger whilst being unmarked himself.Hart was game and kept coming, but was unable to land effectively on Johnson .Johnson won the first half of the fight convincingly but did not press enough in the second half of the fight. The referee gave the verdict to Hart ,his excuse was he was the more aggressive of the two.It was never an eliminator for Jeffries title because Jeffries publicly stated before the fight that in the event of Johnson getting the verdict which he fully expected him to, he would refuse to fight him.I have the round by round account of this fight and the reaction of the premier referee of that era George Siler to the result,he called it .
                  "an exceedingly strange verdict."

Why do you comment on fights of which you are obviously entirely ignorant?

                    - - Never once heard or seen a pic of Hart raw hamburger face.

Ref said, ie THE REF said he awarded Hart the fight because he was the only fighting in spite or repeated warnings to JJ.

Read Pollacks Jack Johnson The Rise ,It gives a detailed round by round of the fight and describes Hart's condition.
BTW Your comment has emphatically endorsed my one about IGNORANCE.
Thanks, but I really don't need any help demonstrating your lack of boxing acumen!
