Just one of the striking things about re-watching Duran/Leonard II is how close the fight actually was. Duran was barely behind, if at all. The fight could easily have been judged a draw up to the time of the quittage.
The second thing is: Duran was not being taunted at all when he decided to quit, nor just previously to it. Only in the previous round had he been taunted and toyed with, a round which he likely won, or at least broke even in.
So, why then, did Duran quit?
I think the secret is out: the man had to shît and shît good.
But there was even more to it. Couple the need for a raging shît with a freak bout of early onset of pugilistica dementia, and you have a recipe for just what happened.
There was no need for Duran to quit, he had the fight well in hand and was slowly talking control.
Either what I have said, or the man's family was being kidnapped until he threw the fight. You decide.
