  • Why Duran Quit

Just one of the striking things about re-watching Duran/Leonard II is how close the fight actually was. Duran was barely behind, if at all. The fight could easily have been judged a draw up to the time of the quittage.

The second thing is: Duran was not being taunted at all when he decided to quit, nor just previously to it. Only in the previous round had he been taunted and toyed with, a round which he likely won, or at least broke even in.

So, why then, did Duran quit?

I think the secret is out: the man had to shît and shît good.

But there was even more to it. Couple the need for a raging shît with a freak bout of early onset of pugilistica dementia, and you have a recipe for just what happened.

There was no need for Duran to quit, he had the fight well in hand and was slowly talking control.

Either what I have said, or the man's family was being kidnapped until he threw the fight. You decide.

I had one of Duran's God children in my class.

Duran and her father promoted a couple of small club fights (Miami) during the early 2000s.

The most common excuse Duran used during those days was the 'I needed to shlt' story.

    For whatever that is worth.

I always felt it was a combination of all of the above mentioned (except the dementia; I found Duran to be quite lucid during those days).

I think he was frustrated and not mentally into the fight, found Leonard mocking more annoying than we can actually imagine, and his eight million* dollar check was cashed, so he pretty much just told everyone to f uck off.

According to the girl, Duran has a viscous temper and could be quite frightening when angry, even when around family and friends. I never saw that Duran, I only saw him when he had his promoter hat on, at the fights.

    * Duran had only received one million for the Montreal fight and that was his biggest payday to date. I suspect the eight million had his head swimming and was distracting to someone who came from that level of poverty.

"I had to shît," is the most common excuse of any man who just polished off two steak dinners with a gallon of orange juice.

        - - All of the above Pep save the behind the curtain Grand Finale where Duran takes a Monumental shhh as Leonard could never manage as Randy Gordan testified to.

And me from afar back in the day without that testimony had already figured "it" out "it" was so obvious. It happens...

Leonard was greatly embarrassed in what could've been his greatest boxing performance was still upstaged by Duran.

A lingering doubt in an otherwise accepted theory.

If you watch the footage, Duran stays in the ring for a good while, and even after walking out he is seen wasting precious time with his cornermen, who embrace and console him for whole minutes.

Now, if I had a true urge to defecate, I would not care a iota about staying in the ring or being embraced after the fight, but would direct myself straight to the toilet...

Can you link to that vid? Those I've seen finishes after he has his gloves off clearly getting ready to take that epic dump.

It's the regular broadcast video you find on YouTube in various versions. Around the 36th minute - well after the fight's over - Duran is seen without gloves, that's right, surrounded by his consoling team for long moments. He doesn't look in a particular urgency to deliver the dump, or anything else, but just dejected. Perhaps my perception is wrong, but I stress: if that is the problem and it's me in the ring, I quit fighting and go running to the toilet.

Also, a revelatory clue at the end of the 7th round: as the bell sounds, Duran instinctively gestures towards Leonard as if to say "fùck it". He was already thinking of quitting.

                    I surrender

Let's just say, then, that Duran did know his s_hit around a boxing ring.
