A lot of boxing cognoscenti in the 1950's didn't think that highly of Marciano.

As time has passed and the knowledgeable old timers died off he has become very overrated.

Those comments don’t jive with what you see. The idea that Marciano was an open target wild slugger is obviously off base. As follows:

This is an excellent Video presentation on Marciano. To put things in some general perspective... the average pug, on up to professional fighters who were decent, not necessarily particularly great, could do things in the ring that fighters today cannot do. There is no way a fighter could have a major weakness, be an unpolished, hard hitting one trick poney and reach the heights Marciano did.

People tend to think about size and weight... but there is major ignorance about getting in the ring with a guy who was light on his feet, could do everything in the book, and was tough as nails. A guy like La Starza for example... You could not clinch a guy for a rest because that guy's trainer would make damn sure the guy knew how to hit you to the body. You could not just back away because guys were trained to fight 3 minutes of every round and were conditioned to do so.

Jack Sharkey didn't think much of him, and Ray Arcel said Jack Dempsey would murder Rocky.

They knew what they were watching. It's only modern day revisionism that has turned Marciano into more than what he was.

Sharkey and Arcel felt Dempsey would destroy Marciano. I do also. That does not mean that Marciano did not have serious skills coupled with unlimited endurance and ko power in both fists. The video I posted provides excellent examples.

I'm not saying Marciano was a bum.

Just that it's important to place him properly in the ATG pecking order. Something which many people today have lost the ability to do accurately.

Arcel said Locche was more clever than Willie Pep so he obviously wasn't stuck in the past of his idealized youth.

Marviano was always considered top 10 ATG at heavyweight. Fleischer who was a Rocky critic stated Ali had no chance beating Marciano. I believe Marciano would have an excellent opportunity to defeat Ali. The idea this would be a one sided fight is complete rubbish born from ignorance. Marciano was Frazier’s superior and Joe gave Ali hell in three bouts.

Joe Frazier was an Olympic gold medalist, 20 lbs bigger than Rocky, and only ever lost to two men as a pro: Ali and Foreman.

I don't think Marciano was Frazier's superior at all. That's an opinion certainly open to debate.
