  • Jack Sharkey comments from the 1950’s

Dempseys speed is very much overlooked. He was triphammer fast. Note Sharkeys opinion as he compares Dempsey to Marciano. This is from 1953.

Interesting article. But as expected the bias is out strong. He keeps saying, "Nothing against Rock..." Sure, except you did not fight him, so how are you supposed to know so much about Rocky's punch.

You never yet heard one of these guys say that the current champion would mop the floor with the boys from his era. You never will, either. The guys who knocked them out were tougher than any era before or since. That never changes.

Of course one cannot dispute certain facts, either. Dempsey looked like he just barely laid a glove on someone, and down they would go. Gerry Cooney and Chico Corrales both had this at their peaks. Their opponents went down from what looked like easy punches. Dempsey's punches do not look that hard. They just are that hard.

Great article fun to read. When Louis came along comparison with Dempsey were all over the papers; I guess the same with Marciano.

Sharkey only compares the two in one short paragraph, the rest of the article is him waxing poetically about how it was so much better in his day.

I love the way he indirectly poo-poos TV fights. Doesn't seem to like that new fangled thing much nor the type of fan it has created.

Does every old guy think he knows the fight game better than the current generation?

Difficult question for me to answer since I actually do know the game better!

Sharkey had the opportunity to state Dempsey hit harder than Louis. He didn’t.

          He didn't, correct.

I got the feeling he didn't like saying he got KOed by either and offered the classic losing boxer's reply, look how much I got paid.

The reply really didn't make much sense otherwise. He unwittingly told us he was at the end of his career against Louis (36K) and at the top against Dempsey (211K); I don't think that was his intention.

Pretty much every fighter ever thinks their generation was better than past, current, or future generations. It's very much an ego thing, but Nash just gets small **** vibes from it. Boxers desperately trying to make themselves and their resumes look better by down-talking other generations. It's something that will never not be the case though. Future generations will be the same. Nash out.

Just imagine, thirty years from now, guys like Broner and Wilder will be talking about how fighters were so much tougher and more skilled in their day.

Sharkey made numerous observations absolutely on point regarding the 20’s vs the 50’s in terms of the boxing scene of both eras.

His comment regarding Dempseys speed is almost always never considered regarding Dempsey. Predominately because of the silent era film footage as well as his punching power always overshadowing all else. Dempsey was extremely quick beyond our expectations. I believe if prime Dempsey was here today it would be the speed of his attack we would all be talking about.

Arcel during an interview by **** Cavett was asked what it was like to watch Dempsey fight. Arcel exclaimed “THE SPEED!”. He also revealed he attended Dempseys bout with John Lester Johnson in 1916. Arcel stated Dempsey “did not look that hot”.

I just watched the Arcel-Cavett interview. That's a pretty truncated quote you used there. He said he wasn't "impressed" and this was after being given a build up . . . Also he states that Dempsey wasn't into or wasn't committed to the three New York fights at that point.

Right. Arcel felt Dempsey did not look that hot. In other words he was not very impressed.
