The feeling in the room was definitely that anything good that Marquez did after that was a huge achievement. Manny not being able to take him out each round after was like a slight against him. An even round would be like a win for Marquez. I haven’t rewatched it in ages. I do remember feeling like that first round was almost a detriment to Manny as it caused a Rocky ideal. Still nobody would want to be the guy that got dropped three times and be proud of a draw. So yes some bias id think. You let me know if you rewatch.
I think maybe it’s match three I thought JMM should have won. He does so well but always finds himself on his duff at some point. Even in match four he dropped Manny only to be put down himself after. Yeah he landed the “tecate counter” to put Manny to sleep but I think a lot of that had to do with Manny just pushing too hard like he wanted to go home.
My favourite fighter is Eric Morales. Still I know his only motivation to beat Manny was cause that’s how he could get one on MAB.
Im going to watch later tonight... last night when I got some breathing room rewatched the Joshua Usyk fight.

I remember thinking the fight was over at the third knockdown. It was a miracle what Marquez pulled off.

How’d the AJ v Usyk fight go? AJ look just as bad and Usyk look just as good? My brother picked Usyk. I thought it would be close and a bit “stinky” but AJ would win on points. Usyk stepped up the pace right away and he threw. Great head movement. I thought maybe he wouldn’t be able to keep it up but he did all night. Long camp he said, extra ready. It showed. AJ more true athlete than true boxer. No improvements in his game, just lack of confidence.

Exactly. I mean I’ll never forget it. I missed the first two knock downs, but as soon as I walked in I could feel the tension and energy. The slow motion scream of “Marquez has been down twice already!!” There was surely nothing more explosive and dramatic happening in the world at the time. Felt that way anyway. Still holding several boxes of pizza and balancing tins of chicken wings, I saw Marquez go down!!! Initially I sank as three KD’s in a single round is surely a stoppage and possibly even mandated. When the ref counted any didn’t stop the fight, it was like another quarter out of nowhere getting slammed into an arcade cabinet. He made it count that’s for sure.
Manny said he’d burn through the three kings of Mexico ( amazing quote btw ) but he ended up going win-draw-loss. Still he was the one putting people down. Great era.

Right. Boxing will always be looking for the next Manny coming out of the Philippines. I also hope Pinoys themselves are motivated to achieve in boxing since manny blazed the trail to the top. It’s great for the sport. They are known for their pleasing style also. Did Magsayo look that huge or Russel just that small? Onward and upward I hope. Gas up the Jeepney.

AJ has talent, always has, but there are levels to the game... I rewatched the first Marquez Pac fight! Wow.... never gets old. I do think Marquez deserved the nod. Just a really good fight with a lot of counters, and real championship rounds.

Donaire should have been the next Pacquiao, but Filipinos viewed him as American.

                      - - Fight turned against AJ in the 10th rd when his open eye got popped that yield mucho pain and corncern about a broken orbital. The close scores reflect that Usyk won those last 3 rds, but his face reflects AJs near a stoppage win, not the Usyk masterclass the Ring Echo Chamber crowed about.
