Isnt that cool? Notice how they keep a "swords length" distance? And also notice how important the grapple is? Everything is set up so that when any fighter enters that space they set the trap, throw the blows, etc. The distancing is totally different than modern Dempsey area boxing where the fighters square up. Neither guy here showed the lead, which was the "jab" of the day, and a way someone would try to enter the gap to get off a combination.

Yeah! Fitzsimmons straight up in a fencer stance (old bareknuckle). Really interesting grappling, you can see the experience in both fighters.

it looks like a rough go getting in with these guys

Fantastic quality... probably the first real fight, where we can clearly see, what's going on!

I think as boxing evolved, we see a much cleaner sport aspect, reaching the zenith in the amatuer style. But as a fighter, analyzing some of the technical things in a bout like this are hard to do, but worth it. One such thing is grabbing the head of the opponent to come in to try to unbalance. Also a lot of punches get thrown in the grapple. Ultimately Fitz beats Corbet with a blow to the plexis that comes out of the grapple.

Rando semi-relative anecdote - Did you know it was Bill Richmond who created the trend of stripping down to show off his body during a fight? Yup, he had a few retirements and in one of his returns he chose to prove to everyone he was in shape by showing them his body.

It's one of those rare times BK and modern boxing have something in common with ancient boxing by chance rather than purpose. We fight shirtless and they fought damn near naked because Bill made a big stir with his muscles not because of Hercules and ****, though you might guess Greeks if you knew no better

Still in the bare knuckle stance. Fitzsimmons is a natural middweight and looks a bit puffy to me with the extra weight.

Did anyone else notice how cavernous that ring looked?
They went with the full 24 foot ring the MQB rules calls for - the film camera was stationary and could not dolly or pan - when Corbett goes down from the infamous blow he crawls to the ropes to try to pull himself up - he crawls out of frame (out of view).

A few years later the film people had enough clout and could produce enough revenue that they started using smaller rings to accommodate the stationary cameras.
