    Has this ever happened?

First read I thought this a strange topic then of course I started thinking on it . . .

    Her's one with a qualifier attached . . .

Max Baer was charged in the death of Frank Campbell in 1930 in San Francisco. Chargers were dropped.

    Later on . . .

Primo Carnera stopped Ernie Schaaf in 13 rounds in February 1933. Schaaf died a few days later.

Six months earlier (1932) Baer had given Schaaf a terrific beating over 12 rounds, with Schaaf unconscious at (saved by) the bell.

Schaaf complained of headaches afterwards but kept fighting, thus the Canera KO ending his life.

Most of the newspaper guys at the time were espousing the argument that it was the Baer beating that did him in.

So I think we can add to Max Baer's resume 1 & 1/2 ring deaths if you like.

Baer was the closest I could think of. But I don't believe he counts.
      Carnera killed Schaaf.

Kovalev killed one, Omar Chavez killed one, Subriel Matias has one. Can't think of more than that.

I believe Bob Fitzsimmons, Charles (Bud) Taylor and Sugar Ramos are the only world champions with two ring deaths on their conscience.

NB: On Fitzsimmons' record only one of his ring deaths is listed. However, in November 1894 another opponent, Con Riordon, was fatally injured - but since it was an exhibition bout, this result is not included in his BoxRec record.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle, November 17, 1894; Reno Evening Gazette, November 17, 1894; Syracuse (New York) Daily Standard, November 17, 1894; Ogden (Utah) Standard-Examiner, November 17, 1894; Syracuse (New York) Herald, February 14, 1933; Syracuse (New York) Herald Journal, May 19, 1989. Riordan was Fitzsimmons’ sparring partner, and he had not boxed competitively since losing to Jack Slavin in June 1892. Thus, Fitzsimmons normally took it easy on Riordan, who was also a heavy drinker. After being told of the death, Fitzsimmons said, “I knew he had been drinking hard, but did not know he was in such a condition... The blow that caused the trouble was as light as I could make it, I merely slapping him with the back of my hand. He fell down then rose and staggered around... When he fell headlong, I thought he was faking, and was thoroughly disgusted.” The death certificate listed the cause of death as “hemorrhage within the cranial cavity, causing compression of the brain.” The clot was on the right side of the brain, very deep. Fitzsimmons was arrested on a charge of manslaughter in the first degree, but was later acquitted. Fitzsimmons bought the burial plot for Riordan, in Section 51 of Oakwood Cemetery, and helped carry the casket, but no one ever bought Riordan a gravestone.
