But that dynamic you just described was exactly what was at the heart of the Barrera-Morales trilogy. From what I’ve heard, to Mexicans who are living abroad it doesn’t matter which part of Mexico you’re from. For the most part, if you’re Mexican then they’ll support you.
But it’s not like that in the home country; there, every fighter is representing their own section of the country. This doesn’t exclusively involve Tijuana and Mexico City. Every city, province and region has their own guy that they try to push as the rightful candidate to represent Mexico on the world stage. The sectarianism gets to a level that reminds of the East vs. West Hip-hop rivalry from back in the 90’s, just with way more parties involved.
That underlying tension was made even worse when Barrera decided to mock Morales’ poor background, even though Barrera’s upper middle class status made him the actual odd one in the world of boxing. (Seriously, if you’re going to make fun of Morales starting out poor, then you’re gonna have to make fun of all your favorite boxers ever.)
