I thought I was replying to the Ali stoppage not Foreman. I now confused. Lol

LOL Houdini had quoted the Foreman fight and you responded generally so I assumed you were discussing the Lyle Foreman fight... My bad.

Foreman was a year and a half removed from his last bout when he fought Lyle. He was not in prime shape physically or mentally.

Quite a few thought Ali carried Lyle. Lyles strategy going in was to try NOT to beat Ali. In other words conserve himself. So you had both fighters conserving themselves at the same time. Ali with his new found “mirage” and Lyle just trying to do barely enough to win rounds. Boring affair that Ali ended when he wanted at the beginning of round 11.

Well lets remember perspective here... The Ali Lyle fight is not exceptional, especially with respect to action. But compared to the Lyle Foreman fight it really looks boring. You know... I keep hearing excuses for Foreman and Frazier. They were "old", had not been active, etc. Thats boxing... Ali is IMO the only one who deserves some consideration with regard to this notion because he spent his prime fighting a hostile government... As good as he was, we missed what would have been prime Ali and this does bare mentioning.

The point is that some point to this bout to illustrate Lyles ability. However through most of the ten rounds Lyles strategy fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world was to conserve himself. He purposefully did not try to win in fear he would punch himself out.

Sometimes it is not bad strategy; some fighters come their big moment freeze up and never take the risks necessary to win it all, they play it safe/smart (so they think at the time) and regret it later. Virgil Hill said of his loss to Tommy Hearns: " I had the best seat in the house and forgot to show up."

Lyle took 30 some unanswered punches before the ref stopped the fight. The last a brutal hook that jerked Lyles head violently. It was not a quick stoppage. Lyle made no effort to fight back.

Dempsey, under the lights an face to face, Lyle isn't gonna beat Dempsey. He might hurt him or have some success, but I don't see Lyle getting it done vs a hungry Dempsey in his prime.
