'I don't miss fighting. When I got older, it was a chore. When I got old, everybody wanted to beat Roberto Duran. Now my life is good. I play dominoes. I play ball with children in the street. If someone tries to pick a fight with me in a bar, I call security. I love cooking. I'm a pretty good cook. And I go to the movies a lot. When I was a boy, I used to shine shoes to get enough money to go to the movies.'
- Roberto Duran
'I'm a natural puncher and can take out any opponent. Most of the time it is a right uppercut, left hand, that does the damage. Sometimes I can feel the flesh separating from the bone.'
- Earnie Shavers
'I always felt Duran could have been at the top of any lightweight division. If not the champion, then he would have been a leading contender.
I feel Duran could have fit into that great group of lightweights during the 1917 period. He could have held his own with all the champions who followed Benny Leonard. I know there are many who will dispute this.
He has learned the element of surprise very well. He can confuse an opponent and can box as well as fight. Duran suffered as a lightweight because of a genuine lack of good competition. When he was the titlist the division was at its lowest ebb, I believe, in its history.'
- Ray Arcel
Sounds like Ray Arcel thinks Duran is the best lightweight ever. Do you agree or think Benny Leonard is?
Hard to say. Leonard undoubtedly fought the better comp at that weight. But was he better? Better minds than mine have debated that for a long time.
Well if Leonard had the better competition, I'm going to lean towards him. A quick check of their records shows they both had impressive title reigns, with Duran having the edge in defenses by a few with both fighters having a lot of non title fights, but winning most of those as well.

They're close, no doubt. I have no problem with anyone ranking Leonard, Duran and Gans at number one. All were incredible and tough to differentiate.
'I always say that in order to appreciate warm weather, you must experience cold. I wouldn't change one thing - all the embarrassing moments, the defeats, all of everything - through all of this, I have learned me.'
