people could have said he was great but we will never know if there is hardly any footage.

we have a guy like Johnson who looked downright terrible when he fights, lunging in, chin exposed, getting dropped by men much smaller and weaker than him. Now unless we go by accomplishments a man like he shouldn't even touch the ATg list. Accomplishments wise - he may however. IMO.
While I know you have a well documented antipathy for boxing historians in the cases of fighters who lack available footage I rely on the expertise of those historians and what they estimate the abilities of those fighters are. I have Johnson ranked #3 at Heavyweight btw, based on what boxing historians have documented his abilities to be. Remember, I'm not one of those who think pre-1960 fighters were aweful.

I don't think that either, I have some fighters pre 1960 that i'd like to call my favorites.

I was using Johnson as an example.

Who are you picking this saturday btw

I'm not picking I'm afraid: Too many unknowns. Mayweather's coming off a long layoff, Marquez is at the point where he could get old overnight. I hate picking matchups with too many X factors lol.

When I rank fighters I'm doing so on the basis of if they all had to fight each other how would the standings shake out.....simple as that.

so what your saying is you ranking is based of fansty fights?

Not in the sense of Fighter A beats Fighter B so A is better than B. It's more in the sense of all fighting all and who comes out on top with the best record and how the standings fall from the top down. If you had all the great Heavyweights fight each other 5 times I can easily see Ali coming out with the most wins for example.

Very modern feel to your list but you don't feel Whitaker of fairly modern fighters makes the top 100?
No Armstrong or Pep is suprising too?
Still your list is your list thanks for posting.
