I think RObinson's hype as a Welterweight is largely owed to that fact that for most of his Welterweight career he was really a Middleweight cutting to 147. He probably was as spectaular a finisher as the reports indicate. But he was also being placed against guys who were there for virually no other reason than to be knocked out.
You're right, when LaMotta hit his stride, Ray struggled mightily with him. I don't completely discount the first and final fights, but they don't carry as much weight with me as they do with others.
Still, Robinson was a fistic marvel. He was a much better finisher than Monzon, and more versatile.
I simply can;t imagine Monzon beating the Robinson of the Maxim fight. Monzon's M.O. just wouldn't work on Robby.
