Originally posted by hhascup View PostI would have to rate Charley Burley, Mike Gibbons and Joey Archer a head of Briscoe. Briscoe was rated from January 1972 to May 1979 by the Ring, he was rated for a total of 82 months, and his highest rating was #2. Burley was rated in the Welterweight and Middleweight Divisions from September 1938 to August 1947, for a total of 100 months and he was rated #1. Archer was also rated #1 in the Middleweight division in the mid 1960's. Gibbons fought before the ratings was out but he only lost 10 (5 of them were newspaper decisions) out of 133 bouts.

marvin in my eyes is one of the greatest fighters who has ever lived.

"Suffering from hepatitis six months earlier, Briscoe had dropped a disputed 10-round decision to the clubfighting Vinales in Scranton, PA." - so says Peltz
Peltz also alluded to the "disputed" nature of the decision, which is something I have heard/read before, although I'd have to search out the source of that original information.

Burley had 50 knockouts in 98 bouts (Benny had 53 out of 96 bouts) and floored Archie Moore 4 times winning a Decision. Sugar Ray Robinson wouldn't even fight him. Burley, Holman Williams, Archer & Gibbons were better. Williams was rated in both the Welterweight and Middleweight Divisions from June 1937 to February 1947, a total of 107 months and a lot of them were when he was rated #1.Last edited by hhascup; 12-28-2006, 10:31 PM.

Out of curiousity, did anybody download that Burley/Smith that I put up on the site some months back?
If so, and with consideration given to the fact that Burley was slipping already by that point in time, what did you(s) think of his skillset, style and whatnot?
