I do think Benny was one of the top Middleweight Contender ever, BUT he wasn't better then Burley or some of the others.
I did have to make a quick correction as Briscoe was not dropped but Vinales was. Either way, Hearns never lost to a fighter of that calibre.

Yes, I saw that too, BUT it's still a good catch!

Burley was rated in the Welterweight and Middleweight Divisions from September 1938 to August 1947, for a total of 100 months and he was rated #1. Archer was also rated #1 in the Middleweight division in the mid 1960's. Gibbons fought before the ratings was out but he only lost 10 (5 of them were newspaper decisions) out of 133 bouts.
Burley was great fighter but not the power of BB...I am imparcial to BB since I strongly believe that he hads the style to beat Hagler and the power.....

Yes, he was born in Newark New Jersey and I wrote to him last week to see if he can make his way to New Jersey so we can put him into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame. I happen to be the President & Historian. I will up-date you all if and when I hear from him.

Ah, and I'm sure Hearns never had to fight an opponent while suffering from hepatitis, which is what Briscoe was going through according to two AP reports I have (dated Nov 5th & 11th of that year), as well as according to other sources like Russell Peltz...

"Benny Briscoe, on the comeback trail after a bout with hepatitis, meets world middleweight boxing champion Carlos Monzon Saturday for the title." -AP report Nov 5th, 1972

"Suffering from hepatitis six months earlier, Briscoe had dropped a disputed 10-round decision to the clubfighting Vinales in Scranton, PA." - so says Peltz

Peltz also alluded to the "disputed" nature of the decision, which is something I have heard/read before, although I'd have to search out the source of that original information.

Sorry But I have to disagree with you on that!

Burley had 50 knockouts in 98 bouts (Benny had 53 out of 96 bouts) and floored Archie Moore 4 times winning a Decision. Sugar Ray Robinson wouldn't even fight him. Burley, Holman Williams, Archer & Gibbons were better. Williams was rated in both the Welterweight and Middleweight Divisions from June 1937 to February 1947, a total of 107 months and a lot of them were when he was rated #1.

Out of curiousity, did anybody download that Burley/Smith that I put up on the site some months back?

If so, and with consideration given to the fact that Burley was slipping already by that point in time, what did you(s) think of his skillset, style and whatnot?
